Caterpillar Machines Powered By 3054 (5HK) And 3056 (8XJ) Machine Engines
The following is the correct procedure for tightening the cylinder head bolts and nuts.
NOTE: Some earlier publications mentioned retorquing the cylinder head bolts after running the engine at partial load for thirty minutes. This is NOT correct. NO RETORQUE IS REQUIRED.
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Procedure
Cylinder head bolt identification and bolt tightening sequence for 3054 Engines.

1. Put engine oil on the threads of the cylinder head bolts and nuts. Tighten all bolts and nuts in number sequence to a torque of 110 N·m (80 lb ft).
2. Again tighten all bolts and nuts in number sequence to a torque of 110 N·m (80 lb ft).
3. Tighten all bolts and nuts in number sequence as follows:

- a. Short bolts (S) 150° further
- b. Medium length bolts (M) 180° further
- c. Long bolts (L) 210° further
