Service Tools For Electronic Controls {0781,0782}

Usage:

Introduction

The Special Instructions or Tool Operating Manual for the following tools and/or software are included with the group. They are also available in the Special Instruction microfiche SBFY1006.

All application programs, described in this article, are purchased separately through the Caterpillar Literature System.

8T-8697 Electronic Control Assembly [Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP)]

The 8T-8697 ECAP is the primary service tool for electronic controls at this time.

It allows access to the controls at all security levels. It comes with a Utility/Executive Service Program Module (SPM) installed; which runs the ECAP, selects Metric/English display units and provides communication with the three input/output ports.

The following items can be ordered through the Parts system for use with the ECAP.

7X-1412 and 8T-5275 Adapter Cable Assembly (T-Harnesses): These connect to Port #1 on the ECAP.

They are needed to supply power to the ECAP and allows it to communicate with the electronic controls on the 3406 PEEC and 3176 Truck Engines.

The latest build of the ECAP uses a metal connector for Port #1 in response to dealer requests. The 7X-1412 is the new T-Harness to connect to this metal connector.

The previous T-Harness for the plastic connector was 8T-5275.

7X-1180 Electronic Adapter Group (Internal Expansion Board): The ECAP can accept three application SPMs in addition to the Executive/Utility SPM to handle specific service needs.

The installation of a 7X-1180 Internal Expansion Board provides four more sockets to install additional SPMs, for a total of seven SPMs installed at once.

NOTE: Refer to Service Program Modules (SPM) in this article, for the SPMs available for use with the ECAP.

8C-9801 Electronic Control Group [Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Adapter Group]: This allows the ECAP to measure the frequency and duty cycle of a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal.

This function is accessed through the Utility Functions menu on the ECAP. It can be used to verify or diagnose the operation of some of the sensors used with electronic engines. The group also includes the 8T-5277 Probe Cable ((Pulse Width Modulation Cable).

8C-9995 Plate Adapter Group (Mounting Bracket Group): This is provided to upgrade the early ECAPs.

The 8C-9995 Mounting Bracket Group provides a permanent mount on the ECAP to secure an external module.

NOTE: Order ONLY if the ECAP is not equipped with the 8C-9995 Mounting Bracket Group.

7X-1703 Plate Adapter Group (Mounting Bracket Group): This is provided to mount the 7X-1700 Communication Adapter on the ECAP. It mounts on the 8C-9995 Mounting Bracket Group to secure the 7X-1700 Communication Adapter.

7X-1200 Electronic Tool Group (Timing Interface Group) and 7X-1170 Adapter Cable Assembly (Timing Adapter Cable: These are designed to be used with the ECAP to allow the monitoring and calibration of fuel injection timing on the 3176 engines prior to 3176B engines.

8C-9705 12VDC Converter [12 Volt Converter (ECAP)]: This provides power to the ECAP when it is used away from the engine or vehicle being serviced.

The 8C-9705 12 Volt Converter plugs into Port #1 on the ECAP. It can be switched to provide DC power to the ECAP from either 120 or 240 Volts AC sources at either 50 or 60 Hz.

7X-1403 Adapter Harness Assembly (In Cab Adapter Cable) and 7X-1686 Adapter Cable Assembly (In Cab Adapter Cable): These are used to connect the 7X-1412 or 8T-5275 T-Harness cables on the ECAP or Digital Diagnostic Tool (DDT) to the connector on the dash inside the cab instead of having to open the engine compartment.

On the new 3406E and 3176B engine controls they will be required because there is no diagnostic connector on the control.

7X-1854, 7X-1855 and 7X-1856 Adapter Cable Assemblies (Cranking Cables): These newly released cables allow the ECAP to retain power during engine cranking.

The 7X-1854 Cranking Cable is used with metal Port #1 ECAPs and the 7X-1855 Cable is used with plastic Port #1 ECAPs.

They are small T-Harnesses which are attached directly to the ECAP Port #1.

The standard 7X-1412 or 8T-5275 T-Harness is then attached to it.

The base of the T-Harness is a 2- Pin metal connector that will accept the battery cable or the 8T-9276 Power Supply.

The 7X-1856 Adapter Cable Assembly is an adapter from these cables to the 8C-9705 12 Volt Converter described above.

The breakout cables help service the electronic control systems.

They provide test points for the individual wires in the wiring harnesses to aid in troubleshooting of the engine control system.

They are T cables with individual receptacles on the pigtail portion of the cables.

They can be inserted into the system wiring harness at connector locations.

The individual receptacles on the pigtails are labeled with the wire to which they are connected in the harness.

Standard probe tips, like those on multimeter leads, can be inserted into the receptacles. The cables are listed below.

8T-8726 Adapter Cable Assembly (3-Pin Breakout Cable): Used with 3-Pin circular Deutsch connectors.

8T-8694 Adapter Cable Assembly (5-Pin Breakout Cable): Used with 5-Pin circular Deutsch connectors.
