Pilot Control Valves (Travel)

Usage:

Remove & Install Pilot Control Valves (Travel)

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that the fluids are contained during performance of the inspection, the maintenance, the testing, the adjusting and the repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to the "Tools And Shop Products Guide, NENG2500" the tools and the supplies suitable to collect and contain any of the fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of the fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the hydraulic system before any of the hydraulic lines or any of the components are disconnected or removed.

--------WARNING!------

1. Release the pressure in all of the implement hydraulic circuits (the boom, the stick and the bucket) before any of the hydraulic lines or any of the components are disconnected or removed as follows:

a. Fully retract the stick cylinder rod.

b. Adjust the position of the bucket so that it will be flat on the ground when the boom is lowered.

c. Lower the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground.

d. Shut off the engine and place key in the "ON" position. Put the hydraulic activation control lever in the "UNLOCK" position.

e. Move the control levers for the boom, the stick and the swing to all full stroke positions. This will release any pressure that might be present in the pilot system.

f. Return the key to "OFF" position.

g. Slowly loosen the fill plug on the hydraulic tank and release the pressure.

h. Tighten the fill plug on the hydraulic tank. Tighten the fill plug to a torque of 68 ± 7 N*m (50 ± 5 lb ft).

i. The pressure in the hydraulic system has been released and the hydraulic lines and the components can be removed.

View From Under Cab

2. Remove seven bolts (1), the washers and the spacers that hold access cover (2) in place. Remove the access cover from under the cab.

View From Under Cab

3. Put identification marks on four hose assemblies (3) that are connected to the pilot control valve (travel) so they can be reinstalled in their original locations. Disconnect the four hose assemblies from the pilot control valve. Put plugs in the hose assemblies to keep dirt and debris out of the hydraulic system.

4. Disconnect spring assembly (4) from the pilot control valve (travel).

Typical Example

5. Remove the rubber floor mate from the cab to gain access to the pilot control valve (travel).

6 Remove two bolts (5) and the washers that hold pilot control valve (travel) (6) to the cab floor. Remove pilot control valve (travel).

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the pilot control valve (travel).

7. Put pilot control valve (travel) (6) in position in the cab floor. Install two bolts (5) and the washers that hold it. Reinstall the rubber floor mate in the cab.

8. Connect spring assembly (4) and four hose assemblies (3) to the pilot control valve (travel).

9. Reinstall access cover (2) under the cab.

NOTE: Refer to the topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation & Maintenance Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the hydraulic oil system.

10. Check the oil level in the hydraulic oil tank.

Disassemble & Assemble Pilot Control Valves (Travel)

Start By:

a. remove pilot control valves (travel)

NOTICE

Do Not mix the components in the pilot control valve (travel) as it is being disassembled. All of the components should be reinstalled in their original locations. Put identification marks on all of the components to prevent mixing.

1. Be sure the outside of the pilot control valve (travel) is thoroughly clean prior to disassembly. Check the condition of all O-ring seals used in the valve. If the O-ring seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

2. Remove rubber cover (3) from pedal assembly (5). Remove two bolts (4) and the washers. Remove pedal assembly (5) from the pilot control valve.

3. Remove two bolts (6) and the washers. Remove lever assembly (2) from the pedal. If necessary, remove knob (1) from the lever.

4. Remove bellows (22) from pedal (24). Remove shaft (28); then remove pedal (24) from cover (26). Remove screws (16) and (23) from pedal (24).

5. Remove two socket head bolts (25). Remove cover (26) from valve housing (14). Remove bushing (19) and (27) from cover (26).

6. Remove plug (29) from the valve housing. Remove O-ring seal (30), scraper (20) and seal (21) from plug (29).

7. Remove rod (7), washers (8) and (15), seat (9), springs (10) and (11), washers (12) and (17) and spool (13) from valve housing (14).

8. Remove the other valve assembly components as in Steps 6 and 7.

NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the pilot control valve (travel).

9. Be sure all of the parts of the pilot control valve (travel) are thoroughly clean and free of dirt prior to assembly.

10. Check the condition of the O-ring seals used in the pilot control valve (travel). If any of the O-ring seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Put clean hydraulic oil on all of the internal parts of the valve prior to assembly.

11. Install spool (13), washers (12) and (17), springs (11) and (10), seat (9), washers (8) and (15) and rod (7) in valve housing (14).

12. Install O-ring seal (30), seal (21) and scraper (20) in plug (29). Install the plug in the valve housing.

13. Assemble and install the other valve assembly as in Steps 11 and 12.

14. Put cover (26) in position on the valve housing. Install two socket head bolts (25) that hold it.

15. Install bushings (19) and (27) in cover (26). Put pedal (24) in position on cover (26), and install shaft (28) to hold it.

16. Install screws (16) and (23) in pedal (24). Install bellows (22) over the pedal.

17. Reinstall lever assembly (2) on the pedal. Install bolts (6) and the washers that hold the unit together.

18. Put pedal assembly (5) in position on the pilot control valve. Install bolts (4) and the washers that hold it.

19. Reinstall rubber cover (3) on pedal assembly (5). If knob (1) was removed, reinstall it on lever assembly (2).

End By:

a. install pilot control valves (travel)
