VARIABLE SPEED FAN CLUTCH Caterpillar

Assembly (100-8105 Fan Clutch And 129-9494 Fan Clutch)

Usage:

Introduction

NOTE: Cool the end cap in a freezer or with dry ice for future installation.

1. Press the front seal retainer assembly (16) onto the fan mounting hub (15) using FT2452 Retainer Installer (40). The inner race of the seal retainer should be recessed 1.02 mm (.040 in) below the shoulder.

NOTE: Check the seal retainer assembly to make sure it is not bent.

2. Coat the ID of the front wear sleeve (14) with 9S3263 Thread Lock.

3. Press the wear sleeve (14) onto the shaft using FT2453 Sleeve Installer (41).

NOTE: The front wear sleeve (14) is not interchangeable with the rear wear sleeve (38).

4. Press sleeve bearing (19) into the fan mounting hub with the FT2451 Bearing Installer/Remover (12). The sleeve bearing (19) is in the proper position when it is just below the chamfer on fan mounting hub.

5. Press sleeve bearing (20) into the fan mounting hub with the FT2451 Bearing Installer/Remover (12). Front end of sleeve is 6.4 mm to 7.1 mm (.25 in to .28 in) below the shoulder.

6. Coat the end cap bore with 9S3263 Thread Lock.

7. Press the end cap (18) to the bottom of the fan mounting hub.

8. Press the retainer/seal assembly (39) onto the shaft using FT2452 Retainer Installer (40). The inner race of the retainer should be recessed 1.02 mm (.040 in) below the shoulder.

NOTE: Check the seal retainer assembly to make sure it is not bent.

9. Coat the ID of the rear wear sleeve (38) with 9S3263 Thread Lock.

10. Press the rear wear sleeve (38) onto the shaft using FT2453 Sleeve Installer (41).

NOTE: The front wear sleeve (14) is not interchangeable with the rear wear sleeve (38).

NOTE: Locate the rear wear sleeve (38) so the notch matches up with the lube hole in the shaft. The notch must be aligned with the hole in the shaft.

11. Install the rear bearing (37) into the rear bearing retainer (35). Press the rear bearing (37) to the bottom of the bore by pressing on the outer race of the bearing.

12. Install internal snap ring (33) into the rear bearing retainer (35).

13. Coat the OD of the seal (36) with 9S3263 Thread Lock.

14. Install the seal (36) flush with the rear face of the rear bearing retainer.

15. Coat the bore of the bearing (37) with 7M7456 Bearing Mount Compound.

16. Install the rear bearing retainer (35) on the shaft (34) with FT2453 Sleeve Installer (41).

NOTE: Spin the rear bearing retainer (35). If any sound is heard then there is interference. Remove the rear bearing retainer (35) and eliminate the point of interference.

17. Install external snap ring (32).

NOTE: Be sure the pitot tube holes in the shaft are clean and free of burrs and staking material.

18. Apply 7M7456 Bearing Mount Compound to the straight end of the pitot tube to approximately 19.0 mm (.75 in).

19. Push the pitot tube (30) to the bottom of the hole. The outer end of the tube should be located well within the pulley-locating shoulder of the rear bearing retainer.

20. Rotate the pitot tube (30) so the open, bent end faces in a counterclockwise direction, and is exactly parallel to the surface of the rear bearing retainer.

21. Stake each pitot tube at 120 degree intervals to prevent the tubes from rotating in operation.

22. Install the seal rings (31) into the grooves of the shaft.

23. Install the front bearing (13) into the front bearing retainer (11). Press the front bearing (13) to the bottom of the bore by pressing on the outer race of the bearing.

24. Install internal snap ring (8) into the front bearing retainer (11).

25. Coat the OD of the seal (9) with 9S3263 Thread Lock. Install the seal (9) flush with the front face of the front bearing retainer.

26. Coat the bore of the bearing (13) with 7M7456 Bearing Mount Compound.

27. Install the front bearing retainer (11) on the fan mounting hub (15) with FT2453 Sleeve Installer (41).

NOTE: Spin the front bearing retainer (11). If any sound is heard then there is interference. Remove the front bearing retainer (11) and eliminate the point of interference.

28. Install the clutch hub (5) on the fan mounting hub (15) splines with the open end down.

29. Install the external snap ring (4) to hold the clutch hub (5) in place.

30. Install seal rings (27) and (28) into the piston (26). Lubricate the seal ring grooves with clean engine oil. Squeeze the "L shaped" seal rings to form it into a tight "V" shape all the way around its diameter. Install the seal rings into the proper grooves.

NOTE: The shape of the grooves will properly accept the seal rings in only one way.

31. Lubricate the seal rings (27) and (28) with clean engine oil.

32. Carefully install the piston (26) in the pulley (29). Rotate the piston (26) slowly clockwise then counterclockwise until the piston (26) falls into place.

NOTE: Do not push the piston into place. Forcing the piston (26) will cause the seal rings to be damaged.

33. Place the front bearing retainer (11) in place on the pulley (29). This will engage the tangs and the slots of the front bearing retainer (11).

34. Rotate the bearing retainer (11) until the bolt holes align in the bearing retainer and pulley.

35. Remove the front bearing retainer (11) from the pulley (29).

36. Install the spring washer (25).

37. Install the shim (24) on the spring washer (25).

38. Install the external snap ring (23) in the groove. It will be necessary to press downward to compress the spring washer (25), while forcing the external snap ring (23) to properly seat in the groove.

NOTE: The shim (24) must be centered on the spring washer (25) to prevent interference with the piston.

39. Place the front bearing retainer (11) with the clutch hub (5) up. Dip the facing plates (21) in clean engine oil.

40. Install a single clutch plate (22) in the front bearing retainer (11).

41. Install a single facing plate (21) on top of the clutch plate (22). Alternately stack the remaining plates until a total of seven of each have been placed on the stack. The last plate is the facing plate (21).

42. Apply grease to O-ring seal (3) in the pulley (29) groove.

43. Install a guide bolt in one bolt hole of the pulley (29). Turn the pulley (29) over on the bench and lift with a hoist.

44. Carefully lower the pulley (29) until it rests on the front bearing retainer (11).

45. Install and snug four bolts (1) with washer.

46. Apply grease to O-ring seal (3) in the pulley (29) groove.

47. Lubricate the bore of the pulley (29) with clean engine oil, and carefully lower the shaft (34) into the pulley bore until the rear bearing retainer (35) rests on the pulley (29).

48. Install the remaining bolts (1) with washers. Tighten to a torque of 47 ± 9 N·m (35 ± 7 lb ft).

49. Install orifice fitting in the oil control port (42) of the shaft bracket.

50. Turn the fan clutch over. Install the remaining bolts with washers. Tighten to a torque of 47 ± 9 N·m (35 ± 7 lb ft).
