SRCR GENERATOR Caterpillar

Bearing Retainer And Brush Yoke Assembly

Usage:

Removal and Disassembly

1. Remove the vented rear cover, generator cover and the bearing. See covering topics.

2. Mark and disconnect the wires from the brush holders.

REMOVING BRUSH HOLDERS
1. Brush holders. 2. Clamping bolts (four). 3. Insulation tubes (four).

3. Remove the bearing retainer and brush yoke assembly from the rotating field shaft. See covering topics.

4. Loosen clamping bolts (2) at both ends of brush holders (1). Remove the brush holders and inspect all four insulation tubes (3) for cracks or other damage. Replace insulation tubes if they are damaged.

5. Disconnect the brush wire from the brush holder and remove brush (7).

NOTE: If a brush is chipped, has a loose wire connection, is unevenly worn, or is worn to the minimum length specified in the brush chart, install a new brush.

6. To remove brush tensioning spring (6), first remove the cotter pin from one end of pin (5), then push the pin from the brush holder and remove spacer (4) and spring (6).

REMOVING BRUSH SPRING
4. Spacer. 5. Pin. 6. Spring. 7. Brush.

NOTE: When the brush spring tension adjustment can not bring the spring tension up to the value listed in the BRUSH CHART, install new springs.

7. Place spacer (4) and spring (6) into the brush holder and insert pin (5) so the inner end (9) of spring (6) fits into slot (8) in the pin (5).

ASSEMBLING SPRING
8. Slot in pin. 9. Inner end of spring.

8. Install brush holders (1) on insulation tubes (3) of the bearing retainer and brush yoke, but do not tighten clamping bolts (2) at this time. Connect the brush wire leads.

9. Install the bearing retainer and brush yoke assembly on the rotating field shaft. Longer insulation tubes (3) should be to the right when viewing the rear of the generator. Connect the marked wires to the brush holder.

10. Install bearing, and generator cover and secure bearing retainer and brush yoke assembly to the cover. See covering topics.

11. Move the rotating field as far to the rear of the generator as possible (the generator bearing has end play clearance in the bearing retainer). Insert the brushes in their proper slots and adjust the brush tensioning spring. See the brush spring tension chart for correct brush spring tension.

12. Move the brush holders, on the insulation tubes, so each brush will contact the collector ring (toward the field poles) and tighten the clamping bolts.
