Usage:

Remove Front Wheel Bearings And Duo-Cone Seal

start by:

a) remove brake head

1. Drain the oil from the front wheel bearing compartment.

2. Remove bolts (2) and cover (1) from the wheel assembly.

3. Fasten strap (3) to wheel assembly (7) as shown.

4. Remove bolts (4), retainer (5) and the shims from the spindle.

5. Remove bearing cone (6) and wheel assembly (7) from the spindle.

6. Remove outer half of Duo-Cone seal (9).

7. Remove bolts (8) and brake disc (10) from the wheel assembly. The weight of the brake disc is 66 lb. (30 kg).

8. Remove bearing inner race (11) from the wheel assembly.

9. Remove bearing outer race (12) from the wheel assembly.

10. Remove bearing cone (13) from the spindle.

11. Remove inner half of Duo-Cone seal (9) from the retainer.

12. Remove retainer (14) from the spindle assembly.

13. Remove O-ring seal (15) from the retainer.

Install Front Wheel Bearing And Duo-Cone Seal

1. Inspect and make a replacement if necessary of O-ring seal (1).

2. Put clean oil on O-ring seal (1) and install retainer (2) on the spindle assembly.

3. Install inner half of Duo-Cone seal (3) in retainer (2) with tool (A). Put a small amount of clean oil on the seal.

4. Install bearing cone (4) on the spindle assembly.

5. Lower the temperature of outer bearing race (5) and install it in the wheel assembly as shown. Make sure the bearing race is on its seat in the counterbore in the wheel assembly.

6. Lower the temperature of inner bearing race (6) and install it in the wheel assembly as shown. Make sure the bearing race is on its seat in the counterbore.

7. Put brake disc (7) in position on the wheel assembly as shown. Install the bolts and tighten them to a torque of 550 ± 60 lb.ft. (750 ± 80 N·m).

8. Install outer Duo-Cone seal (8) in the wheel assembly with tool (A). Put a small amount of clean oil on the seal.

9. Fasten a hoist to wheel assembly (9) and install it on the spindle assembly.

10. Install bearing cone (10) on the spindle as shown.

11. Make an adjustment to the front wheel bearings as follows:

a) Install retainer (11) without the shims with three bolts (12) that have even spaces between them as shown.

b) Turn the wheel slowly and tighten bolts (12) evenly to a torque of 50 lb.ft. (70 N·m).

c) Use tool (B) and measure the distance to the end of the spindle through the two threaded holes in retainers (11). Find the average of these measurements.

d) Subtract the thickness of the retainer from the average distance found in Step c. The distance found plus .010 in (0.25 mm) is the correct thickness of shims to be used between the retainer and the end of the spindle.

12. Install the shim pack that was found in Step 11, retainer (11) and bolts (12). Turn the wheel assembly slowly and tighten bolts (12) evenly to a torque of 185 ± 10 lb.ft. (250 ± 14 N·m).

13. Inspect and make a replacement of O-ring seal (13) if necessary. Install covers (14) on the wheel assembly.

14. Fill the front wheel assembly with oil to the correct level. See MAINTENANCE GUIDE for the correct level.

end by:

a) install brake head
