Steering Clutch Controls

Usage:

Remove Steering Clutch Controls

start by:

a) remove cab*

b) remove batteries*

c) remove steering clutch control valve


*This operation is in the D4E, D5B and D6D OPERATOR'S STATION DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY section.

1. Remove the bolts and nuts (2) that hold the support assembly to the fender. Remove the battery support assembly (1). The weight of the support assembly is 48 lb. (22 kg).

2. Remove bolts (6) and nut. Remove oil filler tube assembly.

3. Remove tube assemblies (4). Disconnect hose assembly (3) from the hydraulic control valve.

4. Remove dip stick and tube assembly (5).

5. Remove two springs (10) from the parking brake linkage. Remove nut (7), bolt and pin (9) from each lever (8). Remove four bolts from each bracket (11). Remove the parking brake ratchet and linkage as a unit.

6. Remove the covers (12) from the steering clutch cover.

7. Remove covers (14). Remove tube assemblies (13).

8. Remove two anchors (15) as they are pulled up and forward. Loosen locknuts and remove two bolts (17). Remove two screws (16).

9. Install a 3/8"-16 NC bolt three inches long in the pins which fasten the steering clutch control rod ends to the steering clutch control bellcranks. Remove the pins.

10. Remove two nuts (18) from each rod end and remove two rod ends.

11. Loosen nuts (19) approximately .250 in. (6.35 mm). Pull frame braces (20) to the rear.

12. Remove the bolts (22) that hold the steering clutch cover assembly (21) to the bevel gear case. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts in the cover assembly. Fasten a hoist to the eyebolts and remove the cover assembly and steering clutch controls. The weight of the cover assembly is 180 lb. (81 kg).

Install Steering Clutch Controls

1. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material on the surfaces of the bevel gear case and the steering clutch cover assembly that come in contact with each other.

2. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts in the cover assembly. Fasten a hoist to the eyebolts and put the cover assembly (1) and steering clutch controls in position on the bevel gear case.

3. Install the bolts that hold the cover assembly to the bevel gear case and tighten to a torque of 75 to 95 lb.ft. (100 to 130 N·m).

4. Tighten nuts (2) to a torque of 170 ± 20 lb.ft. (230 ± 25 N·m).

5. Install two pins (3) in each brake band assembly.

6. Put the rod end in the yoke assembly (6). Install nut (5) and locknut (7) on the rod end. Put 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease on the round surface of nut (5).

7. Use a 3/8"-16 NC bolt 3" long to install pins (4) which connect the rod end to the bellcrank.

8. Install two anchors (8).

9. Install two bolts (9) and locknuts in the steering clutch control cover assembly. Make an adjustment to the rod ends and bolts. See SPECIFICATIONS for D4E TRACTOR POWER TRAIN.

10. Install two tube assemblies (11). Install two screws (10).

11. Install the covers (13) on the steering clutch control cover assembly.

12. Put the parking brake linkage (12) in position and install the bolts that hold it.

13. Install the two levers (14).

14. Put ratchets (16) in position on each lever and install pins (15).

15. Install the springs (17) on the pins.

16. Connect hose assembly (18) to the hydraulic control valve.

17. Install the tube assemblies (20).

18. Install the dip stick tube assembly (19).

19. Install the oil filler tube assembly (21).

20. Put the battery support assembly (22) in position. Install the bolts and nuts that hold it.

Disassemble Steering Clutch Controls

start by:

a) remove steering clutch controls

1. Remove bolt and spacer (1) from each side of the steering clutch control cover (2).

2. Remove bolt (3). Remove the shaft from lever (4) and cover (2). Remove the levers and links (5) as a unit.

3. Remove two cotter pins and pins (6). Make a separation of the two levers and two links.

4. Remove two keys (7) from the shaft.

5. Use tooling (A) to remove bearings from the cover.

6. Remove six bolts (8) and lockwashers. Remove support assembly (9) from the cover.

7. Remove the bearings and races (10).

8. Remove the retainer rings from pins (11). Remove pins (11) from bellcranks (12). Remove rod ends (13) from pistons (14).

9. Remove bellcranks (12), bearing rollers and bearing races from the support (9).

10. Remove eight bolts (15) and lockwashers. Remove two cylinder assemblies (16) from the support.

11. Remove the plug from the bottom of the cylinder. Remove piston (14), spring, ring and seal from cylinder (16).

12. Remove cotter pins and washers from shafts (17). Remove bellcranks (18) from the shafts.

13. Remove the bearings from bellcranks (18) with tooling (A).

Assemble Steering Clutch Controls

1. Install two bearings in each bellcrank (1) with tooling (A).

2. Put 1P808 General Purpose Lubricant on bearings and install bellcranks (1) on shafts (2) with washers and cotter pins.

3. Install seal and ring (5) in each cylinder (6). Install spring (4) and piston (3) in each cylinder. Install plug (7) and O-ring seal in the bottom of each cylinder.

4. Install two cylinder assemblies (6) on support (8) with eight bolts and lockwashers.

5. Install two bearing races (9) and bearing rollers (10) in the support. Put 1P808 General Purpose Lubricant on the bearing rollers. Install two bellcranks (11) in bearing rollers.

6. Adjust rod end (13) length to 3.75 in. (95.2 mm) from the center line of the rod eye to the nut. Put 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease on the round surface of the nut. Install rod ends (13) in pistons (3) and bellcranks (11) with pins (12) and retainer rings.

7. Put support assembly (8) in position in cover (14). Install but do not tighten the six bolts which fasten the support assembly to the cover.

8. Install two bearing races (15) and bearing rollers (16) in the cover. Put 1P808 General Purpose Lubricant on the bearing rollers. Tighten the six bolts which fasten the support assembly to the cover.

9. Install four bearings in the cover with tooling (A).

10. Install two keys (16) in shaft (17).

11. Put lever (20) and lever (21) between two links (18). Install two pins (19) and cotter pins.

12. Install shaft (17) in cover and lever (21). Install bolt which fastens the lever to the shaft.

13. Put the spacers (22) in position, one on each side of the cover assembly, and install the bolts that hold it.
