SUPPLEMENT FOR 793B TRUCK ENGINE Caterpillar

Auxiliary Water Pump

Usage:

Remove & Install Auxiliary Water Pump

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Drain the coolant only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap from the radiator slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to avoid personal injury.

--------WARNING!------

1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.

Typical Example

2. Loosen clamp (5).

3. Remove the bolts and retainers that hold tube (1) in elbow (6).

4. Disconnect hose assembly (3). Remove the O-ring seal.

5. Disconnect tube assemblies (2) and (7). Remove the O-ring seals.

6. Remove the bolts that hold elbow (6) to the cover on the water pump. Remove the elbow. Remove the O-ring seals for the cover and tube (1).

7. Remove three nuts, the cover and the O-ring seal from the water pump.

8. Attach a hoist to the water pump. Remove four bolts (4) that hold the water pump to the adapter on the front drive housing.

9. Remove the bolts and retainers that hold tube (8) in the water pump.

10. Remove the water pump. The weight of the water pump is 29 kg (64 lb). Remove the O-ring seal from the water pump.

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the Auxiliary Water Pump.

11. Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seals. Make sure the O-ring seal for tube (8) is in position in the water pump. Install the O-ring seal between the water pump and the adapter.

12. Fasten a hoist to the water pump. Put the water pump in position on the adapter on the front drive housing. Install four bolts (4). Install the bolts and retainers for tube (8).

13. Install the O-ring seal and the cover on the water pump with three nuts.

14. Make sure the O-ring seal for tube (1) is in position in elbow (6). Put elbow (6) in position on tube (1). Install the O-ring seal and elbow (6) to the cover on the water pump.

15. Install the bolts and retainers to hold tube assembly (1) in place.

16. Install the O-rings. Connect tube assemblies (2) and (7).

17. Connect hose assembly (3).

18. Tighten clamp (5).

19. Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level. See the Operation and Maintenance manual for this information.

Disassemble Auxiliary Water Pump

Start By:

a. remove water pump

1. Remove O-ring seal (4) from the back of housing assembly (3).

2. Remove washer (1) that holds shaft assembly (2) in housing assembly (3).

Typical Example

3. Remove cover (5) from housing assembly (3). Remove the O-ring seal from cover (5).

Typical Example

4. Loosen nut (7) and the washer that hold impeller (6) to the pump shaft. Use tooling (A) to loosen impeller (6) from the end of the pump shaft. Remove tooling (A), nut (7), the washer and impeller (6) from the pump shaft and housing assembly (3).

Typical Example

5. Remove spring (9) from seal assembly (8) and shaft assembly (2).

6. Use a soft hammer, and push shaft assembly (2) out of seal assembly (8) and housing assembly (3). Remove seal assembly (8) from housing assembly (3).

7. Remove ceramic seal (10) from the rubber ring. Remove the rubber ring from housing assembly (3).

8. Remove seal (11) from the back of housing assembly (3).

Assembly Auxiliary Water Pump

1. If necessary, make a replacement of the two filters in the pump housing at location (1).

2. If necessary, make a replacement of plug (2) and the seal.

NOTICE

The cardboard sleeve is required to slightly stretch the inner diameter of the seal to prevent seal damage when installing the pump shaft. Remove the cardboard sleeve only when ready to install the shaft.

3. Use tool group (A) to install the seal in the housing assembly. Make sure the lip of the seal is toward the impeller. Put clean engine oil on the lip of the seal.

4. Install shaft assembly (3) in housing assembly (4). Install washer (5) and the bolts to hold shaft assembly (3) in position.

NOTICE

Clean water only is permitted for use as a lubricant for assembly. Do not damage or put hands on the wear surface of the carbon ring or the ceramic ring. Install the ceramic ring with the smoothest face of the ring toward the carbon seal assembly.

5. Put ceramic seal (6) in position in the rubber ring. Use hand pressure and the tool (which is with the replacement seal) to install the ceramic seal.

Typical Example

6. Remove the spring from seal assembly (7). Use hand pressure and the tool (which is with the replacement seal) to install the seal assembly. Push the seal assembly on the shaft until the seal faces make light contact.

Typical Example

7. Install spring (8) on the carbon seal assembly.

8. Put impeller (9) in position on the pump shaft as shown.

Typical Example

9. Install washer (11) and nut (10). Tighten nut (10) to a torque of 200 ± 25 N·m (150 ± 18 lb ft).

10. Make sure the studs for cover (12) are tightened to a torque of 27 ± 4 N·m (20 ± 3 lb ft) in the pump housing.

11. Put clean engine oil on O-ring seal (13), and install it on cover (12). Put cover (12) in position, and install the nuts to hold it to the pump housing.
