Usage:
(1) Apply 7M7260 Liquid Gasket to seal bore in cage and let dry before installing seal.
(4) Torque for bolts ... 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft)
(5) Apply 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads and tighten nut to a torque of ... 612 ± 68 N·m (451 ± 50 lb ft)
(6) Use shims as needed to adjust backlash (free play) between pinion and bevel gear to ... 0.20 ± 0.10 mm (.008 ± .004 in)
NOTE: Use plate (11) to remove end play and hold pinion from turning. Measure backlash on three equally spaced teeth. Add shims (6) to reduce backlash or remove shims to increase backlash.
Range of backlash on three approximately equally spaced teeth should not be more than 0.08 mm (.003 in).
(11) Dimensions for plate. Make from mild steel 6 mm (0.25 in) thick.
(A) 114 mm (4.5 in)
(B) 85.00 mm (3.346 in)
(C) 32.00 mm (1.25 in)
(D) 14.50 mm (.570 in)
(E) 11.00 mm (.438 in)

Make sure the plate that holds the pinion in place (for backlash checks) is removed when adjustments are complete. |
Adjustment of End Play for Output Transfer Shaft
1. Assemble cage (2) in housing without shims (3). Place two 1/2" diameter cap screws 180° apart.
2. Torque each 1/2" diameter cap screw to 2.25 N·m (20 lb in) using a dial indicator torque wrench.
3. Rotate shaft a minimum of five times to seat the bearings.
4. Torque each 1/2" diameter cap screw to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).
5. Rotate shaft a minimum of five times again
6. Retorque each 1/2" diameter cap screw to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).
7. Measure the gap between housing and flange of bearing cage at the two cap screw locations. (Measure between the OD of the flange and the cap screw).
8. Average the two measurements from Step 7 and add 0.18 mm (.007 in) to obtain the thickness of shims (3) required.
9. Remove the bearing cage and reassemble with shims from Step 8.
Adjustment of End Play for the Pinion Shaft
1. Assemble pinion, transfer gear, and bearings in case, and put the case in a vertical position.
2. Install bearing cup (7), shims (8), equal to 4.32 mm (.170 in), and cover (9). Tighten six bolts that hold cover (9) to case evenly.
3. Install a dial indicator so the tip of the indicator is on bearing cone (10).
4. Press downward on pinion with a force of approximately 450 N (100 lb). Rotate pinion a minimum of five times under this force.
5. Remove the force and zero the dial indicator.
6. Pull upward on the pinion with a force of approximately 450 N (100 lb). Rotate pinion a minimum of five times under this upward force.
7. Read the dial indicator while pinion is under upward force.
8. Subtract the desired end play of 0.10 mm (.004 in) from the measured dimension in Step 7. Subtract this number from 4.32 mm (.170 in) to obtain the correct thickness of shims (8) required. The 4.32 mm (.170 in) dimension is the thickness of shims assembled in Step 2.
EXAMPLE:
9. Remove cover (9) and replace 4.32 mm (.170 in) thickness of shims (8) with correct amount from Step 8.
