SR4 GENERATOR (THREE PHASE FULL WAVE EXCITATION & REGULATION Caterpillar

Bridge Rectifier And Exciter Armature

Usage:

Remove And Install Bridge Rectifier And Exciter Armature

1. Remove cowl cover (1) from the cowl assembly.

2. Disconnect wires (3) from the bridge rectifier.

3. Remove bolts (2) and spacer (5) from the bridge rectifier.

4. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws in the bridge rectifier. Remove bridge rectifier (4) and exciter armature (6) as a unit from the generator. The weight of the unit is 27 kg (60 lb.).

5. If necessary, remove key (8) from shaft (7).

6. If key (8) was removed, install key (8) on shaft (7).

7. Install two 5/16"-18 NC guide bolts in the end of shaft (7). Put bridge rectifier (4) and exciter armature (6) as a unit in position on the guide bolts. Make sure the groove (slot) in the exciter armature is in alignment with key (8) and push bridge rectifier (4) and exciter armature (6) on the end of the shaft.

8. Apply loctite on bolt (2) threads. Remove the guide bolts and install spacer (5) and bolts (2) to hold the bridge rectifier and exciter armature in position.

9. Connect wires (3) to the bridge rectifier.

10. Install cowl cover (1) on the cowl assembly.

Disassemble Bridge Rectifier And Exciter Armature

start by:

a) remove bridge rectifier and exciter armature

NOTE: Steps 1 through 6 can be done without the removal of the bridge rectifier and exciter armature.

1. Put identification marks on wires (1) for correct installation and disconnect wires (1) from varistor assemblies (2).

2. Remove nuts (3) to remove varistor assemblies (2) from the bridge rectifier yoke.

3. Put identification marks on wires (5) for correct installation. Disconnect wires (5) from the terminal strips on the heat sink assemblies.

4. Remove bolts (7) and the washers to remove positive heat sink assembly (4) and negative heat sink assembly (6) from the bridge rectifier yoke.

5. Remove clamp (9) and remove suppression resistor (8) from the positive heat sink assembly.

6. Remove nuts (10) and remove rectifying diodes (11) from both of the heat sink assemblies.

7. Remove string (12) that holds the wires against bridge rectifier yoke (13).

8. Remove bolts (14) and remove the bridge rectifier yoke from exciter armature (15).

Assemble Bridge Rectifier And Exciter Armature

1. Put the bridge recitifier yoke in position on exciter armature (2) and install bolts (1) to hold these in position.

2. Put the wires in position on bridge rectifier yoke (4) and fasten string (3) around the yoke to hold the wires against the yoke.

NOTE: Steps 3 through 8 can be done without the removal of the bridge rectifier and exciter armature.

3. Apply a small amount of 5P8937 or 5P9210 thermal joint compound to contact surfaces of diodes. Put rectifying diodes (5) in position in the heat sink assemblies and install the nuts to hold the diodes in position. Tighten nuts to a torque of 25 to 30 lbs. in.

4. Install suppression resistor (6) and the clamp on the positive heat sink assembly.

5. Put heat sink assemblies (7) and (9) in position on the bridge rectifier yoke. Make sure ground wire (10) from the suppression resistor is in the position as shown and install the bolts and the washers to hold heat sink assemblies (7) and (9) in position.

6. Connect wires (8) to the terminal strips on the heat sink assemblies.

7. Put varistor assemblies (11) in position on the bridge rectifier yoke and install nuts (13) to hold the assemblies in position. Tighten nuts to a torque of 25 to 30 lbs. in.

8. Connect wires (12) to the varistor assemblies.

end by:

a) install bridge rectifier and exciter armature
