Introduction
7X1700 Communication Adapter Group
The 7X1700 Communication Adapter Group is a hand held diagnostic tool designed to be an interface or bridge between non-compatible serial communications links.
It allows for communication between the industry standard SAE J1708 protocol over an EIA RS485 data link (ATA), the proprietary CAT data link, and the industry standard RS232 data link.
The 7X1700 Communication Adapter Group will be used with diagnostic service tools such as the Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) or Digital Diagnostic Tool (DDT) to communicate to an Electronic Control Module (ECM) that is using the CAT data link.
It can also communicate with the RS232 data link which personal computers utilize as their standard.

7X1701 Communication Adapter Features
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
The communication adapter contains a 4 1/2 digit LCD for displaying operational error codes involving the communications links and the adapter. Indicating arrows for various functions are located on both sides of the display.
Service Program Module
The communication adapter's operational software is contained on one Service Program Module (SPM). The NEXG4523 Service Program Module (SPM) must be ordered separately and can be removed and replaced if software updating is necessary:
Refer to Service Program Module Installation in this manual.
Control Port (Data Link)
The communication adapter will communicate with Electronic Control Modules (ECM) when connected with the correct application service cable listed below:
7X1570 ... Communication Adapter to CAT data link
7X1412 ... Communication Adapter to ATA data link
The communication links available at this port are the internal fuse protected SAE J1708 protocol over an EIA RS485 data link (ATA), and the proprietary CAT data link.
Service Tool Port (Data Link)
The communication adapter will communicate with service tools such as the Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) or Digital Diagnostic Tool (DDT), or a personal computer (PC) when connected with the correct application service cable listed below:
7X1420 ... Communication Adapter to ECAP (Plastic .. PORT 1)
7X1851 ... Communication Adapter to ECAP (Metal .. PORT 1)
7X1688 ... Communication Adapter to RS232 (PC)
The communication links available at this port are the internal fuse protected SAE J1708 protocol over an EIA RS485 data link (ATA), the proprietary CAT data link, and the RS232 data link.
Power
Electrical power for the communication adapter can be sourced from an external vehicle battery or any DC voltage source from 11 to 45 volts at 0.5 amps using the correct application service cable. The power input and ground are fuse protected at 2 amps internal to the communication adapter.
Service Program Module Installation
NOTE: The NEXG4523 Service Program Module (SPM) for the Communications Adapter must be ordered separately through the Caterpillar Literature System.
NOTICE |
---|
The service program module is packaged in a container to protect it from static discharge. Before touching the module in the container, or removing from the Communication Adapter, be sure to discharge any static electricity in your body by touching a grounded surface. Use care when opening to prevent damage to the Service Program Module. |
1. Place 7X1701 Communication Adapter (1) face down on a clean and level surface.
2. Remove six screws (2) holding cover (3) in place and remove cover for access to the 7X1701 Communication Adapter's circuit board (4).
3. Locate Service Program Module Socket (5) on circuit board (4).
NOTICE |
---|
Use only finger pressure to remove or install a Service Program Module. The use of any mechanical tool can damage the program module and/or socket. |
4. Install Service Program Module (6) from Conversion Group into empty socket (5).
NOTE: The Service Program Modules and sockets are keyed so that they can only be installed in the correct (seated) position.
5. Reinstall cover panel (3) using six screws (2).
Decal Installation
1. Place Communication Adapter (1) face down on a clean and level surface.
2. Remove paper backing of Communication Adapter Back Graphic Decal (2) and install on Communication Adapter back cover.
Internal Fuse Removal/Test/Replacement
Fuse Removal (For 7X1571 Fuse and 7X1569 Fuse Only)
1. Place 7X1701 Communication Adapter (1) face down on a clean and level surface.
2. Remove six screws (2) holding cover (3) in place and remove cover for access to fuse compartment and fuse location identifier F1, F2, and F3.
3. Slide connector panel (4) to one side.
4. Locate three fuses in fuse compartment (5).
5. Remove the suspect fuse.
Fuse Test (For 7X1571 Fuse and 7X1569 Fuse Only)
6. Use a Digital Voltage Meter (DVM), set on the lowest resistance range, to check the continuity between the two legs of the fuse.
If the fuse is good (reusable) the resistance will be <5 ohm (less than 5 ohm).
Fuse Replacement (For 7X1571 Fuse and 7X1569 Fuse Only)
7. Install replacement fuse(s) in correct location(s), F1, F2, and F3.
NOTICE |
---|
Fuse identification and location must be correct: The fuses at locations F1 and F2 are 1/8 amp for the data link driver circuitry. The fuse at location F3 is the 2 amp power fuse for the communication adapter. The 1/8 amp fuses MUST be installed in locations F1 and F2 or damage may occur to the data link driver circuitry. |
Fuse Removal (7X1705 Fuse Only)
NOTE: This procedure is for a Communication Adapter with an in line fuse holder.
8. Locate fuse holder (6) behind connector panel (4).
9. Remove suspect fuse (7).
NOTE: This procedure is for a Communication Adapter with a PC board mounted fuse.
10. Locate fuse (8) on PC board (9).
11. Remove suspect fuse (8).
Fuse Test (7X1705 Fuse Only)
12. Use a Digital Voltage Meter (DVM), set on the lowest resistance range, to check the continuity between the two end caps of the fuse.
If the fuse is good (reusable) the resistance will be <5 ohm (less than 5 ohm).
13. Slide connector panel (4) back over fuse compartment (5) if necessary.
14. Install cover (2) using six screws (1).
