Introduction
This instruction gives the procedure for updating large duo-cone seal installers not equipped with a latch by installing the 1U5495 Latch Group.
This instruction also gives the procedure for installing seals using the updated seal installer equipped with the 1U5495 Latch Group.
The 1U5495 Latch Group bridges the sawcut gap on the seal installer and will:
- * Hold the installer lips in alignment at the installer gap.
- * Prevent the gap from opening which changes lip-to-toric position during seal installation.
- * Hold the installer in the "open" position during removal to prevent disturbing the installed seal assembly.
- * Prevent the gap from opening which changes lip-to-toric position during seal installation.

Latch Installation Procedure
1. Form all sheet metal strips and plates of the 1U5495 Latch Group to the correct curvature by bending around a radius slightly smaller than that of the seal installer. This allows for "spring-back", so when the piece is firmly applied to the installer, it conforms to the curvature of the installer.
2. Refer to the illustration and chart that follows for dimensions (X) and (Y).
(Drawing not to scale.) (B) Working edge of installer.
3. Mark two lines across installer (1) at dimensions (X) and (Y) from the sawcut.
4. Clamp seal installer (1) in a parallel-jawed vise with the sawcut gap opened 5 mm (.2") as shown in the illustration.
5. Position strip (2) on installer (1) and against the vise jaw opposite the installer working edge (B).
6. Locate strip (2) so that the end hole is bisected by the line at dimension (Y).
7. Use strip (2) as a template and center punch installer surface (1) a distance slightly less than that between the hole centers.
8. Drill the locations center punched in step 7 with a No. 29 drill (.136" Ø).
9. Thread the two holes with an 8-32 tap.
10. Position strip (2) and cover plate (3) on installer (1) with the edges against the vise jaw and the tapped holes in alignment with the holes in strip (2) and cover plate (3).
11. Install two 7S1197 Screws (4) to hold strip (2) and cover plate (3) in place.
12. Slide tongue plate (5) under cover plate (3) with one edge against strip (2). Hold tongue plate (5) in this position for step 13.
13. Slide strip (6) under cover plate (3) and against tongue plate (5) with the holes in strip (6) in alignment with the holes in cover plate (3).
NOTE: There must be a slip fit between strip (6) and tongue plate (5).
14. Center punch installer surface (1) a distance slightly less than that between the hole centers.
15. Drill the locations center punched in step 14 with a No. 29 drill (.136" Ø).
16. Thread the two holes with an 8-32 tap.
17. Install two 7S1197 Screws (4) to hold strip (6) and cover plate (3) in plate.
18. Position tongue plate (5) so that the first two holes are bisected by the line at dimension (X).
19. Hold tongue plate (5) in position and use as a template to center punch four mounting holes in installer (1)
20. Drill the locations center punched in step 19 with a No. 29 drill (.136" Ø).
21. Thread the four holes with an 8-32 tap.
22. Position tongue plate (5) on installer (1) and install four 7S1201 Screws (7).
23. Use the center of the hole in cover plate (3) as a template and center punch installer surface (1).
24. Drill a 6.35 mm (.25") Ø hole through installer (1) at the center punched location.
25. Install the 1/4-20 Thd. x 18 mm (.7") long latch screw (8) with a 1/4" washer (9) and a 1/4-20 Thd. wing nut (10).
With this installation procedure, the sawcut ends of the installer should be held in good alignment and provide uniform force on the toric during seal installation. The tongue plate should slide freely under the cover plate.
Seal Installation Procedure
1. Put the rubber toric on the steel seal ring.
NOTE: Be careful to avoid any initial twist in the toric.
2. Lay the seal assembly on a flat, clean surface with the toric on the bottom.
Improved Duo-Cone seal installer with latching mechanism (A).
3. Loosen the wing nut on latch screw (1).
4. With light pressure on latch screw (1), spread the installer apart until the head of the latch screw drops into the detent in tongue plate (2) and holds the installer open.
5. Place the installer on the seal assembly with the working edge of the installer firmly against the rubber toric.
6. Push the wing nut to release latch screw (1) from the detent in tongue plate (2) and close the installer firmly.
7. Tighten the wing nut on latch screw (1).
8. Lubricate the toric with isopropyl alcohol and install the seal assembly into the housing.
9. When the seal assembly is in the correct location, loosen the wing nut on latch screw (1) and spread the installer until it latches open as in step 4.
10. Remove the installer without disturbing the seal assembly.
