Engine test specifications are given here as follows: common test conditions for all Caterpillar engines; and specifications for each separate application and rating of an engine model.

The performance specifications given are only for use when dynamometer testing an engine, and are used to check the performance of the systems that follow: power output, fuel, lubrication, cooling, and the air system. No adjustment and/or setting information is given here. For adjustment or setting information, see the Service Manual.

Common Test Conditions For All Caterpillar Engines

The charts that follow give the operating conditions at rated load and speed, for the systems that are common to all Caterpillar engines.

NOTE: All dynamometer specifications given for the lubrication system are with the use of CD SAE 10W oil unless shown differently on the test information charts in this instruction. Always check oil pressure on the clean side of the oil filter. Any change in oil pressure must not exceed 2 psi (14 kPa), at a stable (constant) engine speed.

*Inlet manifold temperature.

**Maximum difference in temperature between inlet air and aftercooler supply water.

Fuel System

The fuel supply from the dynamometer test facility to the engine fuel transfer pump, must be at a positive pressure, and not more than 3 PSI (20 kPa). Fuel pressures given in the chart are measured after the final filter and fuel transfer pump.

NOTE: Temperature of fuel when measured at fuel injection pump manifold must be 90°F (32°C). Use a correction factor if fuel temperature difference is more than ± 10°F (5°C).

Specifications given are with the use of CD SAE 10W oil.

Location to check lubrication oil pressure must be on the clean side of the oil filter. Use the tapped hole at the top left rear of the cylinder block, or, a tapped hole in the oil manifold, directly behind the oil filter element.

At any constant engine speed, engine oil pressure must not fluctuate (change) more than 2 psi (13.8 kPa).

Specifications given are with the use of CC or SD SAE 10W-40 or 10W-30 oil.

The location to check lubrication oil pressure during the test, is a tapped hole at the rear of the right side cylinder head.

The location on the engine to check lubrication oil pressure during the test, is a tapped hole at the left side of the cylinder block.
