Lower Shaft

Usage:

Remove Lower Shaft

start by:

a) remove the top shaft

b) remove the reduction gear and planetary

c) remove idler gear

1. Remove bolts (3) and plate (2) from the sun gear (1).

2. Remove the sun gear (1) and spacer (5) off the sun gear shaft (4).

NOTE: The sun gear and shaft can be removed as a unit.

3. Remove tube assembly (6), bolts and clip (7). Remove bracket (8) from the housing.

4. Remove the bolts and retainer (9) from the rear of the sun gear shaft (4).

5. Remove the sun gear shaft (4) from the front as shown.

NOTE: To make the removal of the lower shaft easier, remove fourteen bolts and lockwashers (10) from the right side cover (11) and remove the cover.

6. Remove six bolts (12) from the rear of the lower shaft and remove plate (13).

7. Remove six bolts (14) from the front of the lower shaft and remove plate (15).

NOTE: Turn the housing over to remove the bottom cover (17) for best results in the removal of the lower shaft.

8. Remove twenty-four bolts and lockwashers (16) and remove bottom cover (17). Inspect the gasket and make a replacement if it is broken or damaged.

9. Remove four bolts and washers (18) and remove the pan assembly (21) off the forward gear (26).

10. Remove four bolts and washers (23) and remove the pan assembly (24) off the reverse gear (28).

11. Remove four bolts (20) and two bolts (22) from bearing caps (19) and (25), respectively.

12. Remove the bearing caps (19) and (25) from the dowels (29) and bearing assemblies (27) and (30), respectively.

13. Loosen the bolts that hold the rear retainers.

14. Fasten a sling and hoist to the lower shaft and lift it from the bottom of the housing with care. Be sure not to damage the forward gear (26), reverse gear (28) and the thrust bearing assemblies (27) and (30). Weight of the lower shaft is approximately 300 lb. (135 kg).

Install Lower Shaft

NOTE: Before the lower shaft is installed in the housing be sure the front retainers are tight and the rear retainers are loose. This will permit the lower shaft to be lowered correctly.

1. Use a hoist and sling as a support and put the lower shaft in the housing. Be sure not to damage the forward gear (1), reverse gear (3) and the thrust bearing assemblies (2) and (5).

2. Install bearing caps (9) and (12) with bolts (8) and (13) on dowels (4) and bearing assemblies (2) and (5) respectively.

3. Install pan assemblies (7) and (10) with bolts and lockwashers (6) and (11) respectively.

4. Put the bottom cover (15) and gasket in position and install with twenty-four bolts and lockwashers (14).

5. Turn the housing over to complete installation.

6. Put the plate (17) in position on the rear of the lower shaft and install six bolts (16).

7. Put the plate (19) in position on the front of the shaft and install six bolts (18).

8. Install the sun gear shaft (20) from the front of the lower shaft.

9. Install the retainer (24) on the rear of the sun gear shaft (20).

10. Install bracket (23) with bolts and clip (22) to the housing.

11. Install tube assembly (21).

12. Install the spacer and the sun gear (25) on the sun gear shaft (20) with plate (26) and two bolts (27).

end by:

a) install the reduction gear and planetary

b) install the top shaft

c) install idler gear

Disassemble Lower Shaft

start by:

a) remove top shaft

b) remove reduction gear and planetary

c) remove lower shaft

1. Use tooling (A) and a 8S8033 Electric Hydraulic Pump Group to remove the forward driven gear (1) from the lower shaft (3).

2. Remove the double tapered bearing assembly (2) from the lower shaft (3) with tooling (B) and a 8S8033 Electric Hydraulic Pump Group. Make an alignment with bearing pulling attachment on the bearing assembly (2) to prevent damage.

3. Use tooling (C) and a 8S8033 Electric Hydraulic Pump Group to remove bearing assembly (4) and reverse driven gear (5).

Assemble Lower Shaft

NOTE: Heat the bearing assemblies and gears in oil to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C) for installation purposes. Slide bearings and gears rapidly on shaft and make a seat for them with a soft hammer.

1. Inspect bearings and gears for damage and make replacements if they are worn or damaged.

2. Install reverse driven gear (2) on the lower shaft (3). Be sure gear (2) makes an alignment with key on shaft (3).

3. Install bearing assembly (1) on the lower shaft (3).

NOTE: Turn the shaft assembly over to install double tapered bearing assembly and forward driven gear.

4. Install double tapered thrust bearing assembly, which includes two bearing cones (5), two bearing cups (6) and a spacer (7), on lower shaft (3).

5. Install forward driven gear (8) on lower shaft (3). Be sure gear (8) and key makes an alignment with groove (4) for installation purpose.
