Clutches

Usage:

Disassemble Clutches

start by:

a) remove top shaft assembly

1. Put the top shaft group in a vertical position with the use of tooling (A). Make an arrangement of the FT957 Legs under the plate assembly (1) as shown in the illustration.

2. Remove four bolts and locks (4) from the top cover of the oil pump drive shaft (7).

3. Use two 7/16"-14 NC forcing screws and make a separation of the top cover (5) and the clutch spider (8).

4. Remove the oil pump drive shaft (7). Remove the gasket (6) and inspect it for damage. Make a replacement if it is broken or damaged.

NOTE: Before removal of the bearing retainer bolts put blocks under main shaft group to keep shaft in clutch package.

5. Remove four bearing retainer bolts and two locks (2) from ring.

NOTICE

Shaft will slide out of clutch package when all bearing retainer bolts and locks are removed if it does not have support.

6. Remove twelve stud nuts and washers (3) and carefully remove the clutch spider (8) with a hoist and 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts. Be sure not to damage the clutch studs (16). Weight of the clutch spider (8) is approximately 65 lb. (29 kg).

NOTE: Put marks on clutch plates and clutch assemblies for installation purposes. This will prevent the wear of components.

7. Use 7/16"-14 NC screws and 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts and make a separation of the reverse clutch drive ring (9) from the clutch cylinder assembly (12).

8. Remove reverse clutch drive plates (10) and driven plates (11) from clutch assembly. Inspect the clutch plates (10) and (11) and make a replacement if worn or damaged.

NOTE: Install the clutch plates (10) and (11) in sequence with a sintered bronze plate first at assembly.

9. Remove the clutch cylinder assembly (12) with the use of a 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts and a hoist. Be careful not to damage the clutch studs (16). Weight of the clutch cylinder assembly (12) is approximately 110 lb. (50 kg).

10. Remove the forward clutch drive ring (13) from the plate assembly.

11. Remove the forward clutch plates (14) and (15) in the same sequence as the reverse clutch plates (10) and (11).

12. Remove the plate assembly (17). Make sure the main shaft group has support.

13. Remove retainer rings (19) from the forward piston (20) with tool (B).

14. Lift cylinder assembly (12) off forward piston (20). Be careful not to damage pins (23).

NOTE: The cylinder assembly will then have to be turned over to remove the retainer rings (19) on the reverse piston (18).

Assemble Clutches

NOTE: Before assembly install plate assembly on tooling (B).

1. Lift cylinder assembly (1) and put it on the forward piston (3) without damage to pins (2).

2. Install springs (4), washers (5) and retainer rings (6) with tool (A).

3. Install the clutch plates (7) and (8) in sequence with a sintered bronze plate first.

4. Install forward clutch drive ring (9) on plate assembly (10).

5. Install cylinder (1) on forward clutch drive ring (9).

6. Install reverse clutch plates (11) and (12) in the same sequence as for the forward clutch.

7. Install the reverse clutch drive ring (13).

8. Install the clutch spider (14) with twelve stud nuts and washers (20). Be careful not to damage the clutch studs (15).

9. Install the oil pump drive shaft (16) with four bolts and lockwashers (17).

10. Install four bearing retainer bolts and two locks (18) to ring (19).

end by:

a) install top shaft assembly
