Some 1140966 Crank Gears have been incorrectly cut. The root radius is incorrect and may cause the gear to fail under load.
Action Required
Inspect all 1140966 Crank Gears in Parts Stock.
Use the Illustrations to determine "good" or "bad" gears. A visual check may be done with these Illustrations by looking for similarities in the circled region. If available, the gears should be viewed at 5 to 10 X magnification. A knife edge check can also be done by feeling along the root for sharp corners. The light part of the Illustration is the gear and dark part is the background. If the root of the gear tooth is squared off, as shown in the "bad" gear Illustration, then the gear is not good for use in any engine.
NOTE: TEPS/MEPS dealers are reimbursed for recalled Parts Stock by returning the affected Parts Stock to their administering Caterpillar dealer for replacement.
