NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.

NOTE: This Program can only be administered when a failure occurs after the stated warranty period. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS0413" as Part Number, "7755" as Group Number, "96" as Description Code, and the Track Serial Number in the 20 spaces of Findings/Comments.

NOTE: This letter was changed to general distribution due to increased population. The media number (SEBE6178) and 1989 mail code A-153 were added at the August 1997 revision.

NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the October 23, 1989 Service Letter (Revised December 1995). A change was made to the mail code.

Problem

The tracks on certain D11N Tractors may develop dry joints before an acceptable service life has been achieved. Caterpillar will participate to assure acceptable track joint performance within the guidelines described below. The participation will be on a "One Time Only" basis for each track chain. This program is intended to address dealer and user concerns for failures on machines operating in normal applications, equipped with proper track shoes, and not being abused.

Affected Product
Model & Identification Number

D11N (74Z1-Up, 4HK1-Up)

Participation Exclusions

1. No participation will be considered by Caterpillar unless, at the first repair, a permanent serial number uniquely identifying the track is stamped or welded on the second full right-hand link from the pin end of the master link. Dealer may use any numbering system up to eight characters to identify the track. For example, KEMCL100 or KC1. See the Illustration. If possible, dealer should use the factory serial number stamped on the second full righthand link from the pin end of the master link. Caterpillar prefers this number since it identifies the production date of the track. The serial number must be included in the comments section of each claim.

2. No participation will be considered by Caterpillar unless a copy of the attached form is completely filled out including both the track serial number and track hours. The form must be retained by the dealer for future use by the dealer or Caterpillar. These forms will be requested by Caterpillar from time to time.

Limits Of Participation

1. 6,000 hours of operation or 2 years, whichever comes first.

2. 100% link and/or bushing wear.

3. 100% labor and parts participation through the first complete track disassembly (excluding bushing turn*).

4. 50% labor and parts participation after the first complete track disassembly (excluding bushing turn*).

5. Link assembly participation if link assembly has been previously completely disassembled two or more times.

*A bushing turn will be considered a complete track disassembly. At bushing turn, no participation for labor, track seals, rubber stoppers, retaining rings (PPR), or plastic plugs will be considered. They are normal customer expenses at bushing turn. All track seals require replacement when the track is completely disassembled.

Repair Option Selection Criteria

Dealers must select 1 of 3 repair options according to the following criteria:

Option 1 - Track has developed dry joints for the first time and there are no more than 2 dry joints.
Option 2 - Track has developed 3 or more dry joints and/or a claim against the track has previously been submitted under Option 1.
Option 3 - Track has developed 3 or more dry joints and 2 or more claims against the track have been submitted under Option 2.

Action Required

Option 1

a. Repair individual joints at the job site or at the dealer track shop. Use Undercarriage Reconditioning Special Instructions SEHS8870 for proper repair procedures.

Option 2

a. Completely disassemble entire track and replace all seals and other necessary parts at the dealer track shop. Use Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin SEBF8546 (Positive Pin Retention) for proper repair procedures. Use Guidelines For Undercarriage Parts Reusability SEBF8558 to determine the necessary parts to replace.

Option 3

a. Replace link assembly with new link assembly. The structural integrity of a link assembly which has been disassembled 2 or more times apparently has deteriorated past the point to satisfactorily maintain adequate track joint performance.

Dry Joint Detection

The only positive means of determining whether a dry track joint has developed is when pitch extension occurs. Hot, squeaking, and/or kinking joints are only indicators of potential dry joints. The decision to remove the track from the machine should be based on pitch extension only. Allow the pitch to extend 6 mm (.25") before track removal.

Service Claim Allowances

List on the claim only those new Parts Needed to make repair authorized in this service letter. The track serial number as previously described in the Participation Exclusions Section of this service letter must be included in the comments section on each claim submitted. Dealer must retain a completed copy of the attached inspection form for each claim. No participation in this Program will be possible without this inspection data which must be completely filled out. Also, a dealer can only claim on one option.

At bushing turn, no participation for track seals, rubber stoppers, plastic facing rings (PPR), retaining rings (PPR), or plastic plugs will be considered since they are considered normal customer expense at bushing turn.

All track seals require replacement when track is completely disassembled.

Service Claim Allowances For Option 3

For replacing an entire link assembly, Caterpillar's participation will be determined by the greater of percent wear life used or percent of link hours where 6,000 hours equals 100%. Our computation for this is:

Caterpillar's Participation = D/N Price - Customer participation

Where:

Customer Participation = Customer List Price X The Greater of Percent Wear or Percent Hours to 6,000 Hours

Parts Disposition

Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.
