Procedure To Wash Turbochargers On Engines Powered By Residual Fuel

Use the following procedure to wash the turbochargers on the above engines when they are powered by residual fuel. The turbochargers on these engines should be cleaned after each 100 hours of operation.

1. Reduce engine load to decrease exhaust temperatures 40 to 50°C (72 to 90°F) below full load exhaust temperatures.

2. Open drain valve (1), and check to be sure drain line (2) is not blocked. There is one drain valve for each turbocharger.

3. Fully open needle valves (3) on the exhaust manifolds.

4. Open water supply valve (4) slowly (fully open in 30 seconds). Regulate the supply valve to obtain 0.1 L/min (.03 gpm) flow of wash water out of each drain valve. The water pressure must be 320 kPa (46 psi) or greater at the inlet of the water supply valve.

5. The washing time is 5 to 10 minutes. A measure for the washing time is the clarity of the water from the drain valve.

6. After washing is completed, close supply valve (4) first. Then close needle valves (3). Continue to operate the engine at reduced load until all the parts are dry (about 3 minutes). Close drain valve (1).
