How To Prevent Cylinder Block Failure From Cracks

Usage:

All 4.75"
Bore Engines

Small cracks in the cylinder liner support webs on 4.75" bore engines do not necessarily have an effect on engine service life and/or performance. However, if these cracks are permitted to become too large, they can cause cylinder block failure.

To check for cracks in this area, inspect the cylinder liner support webs carefully any time work is being done in this area. See Illustration 1. If a small crack is found, a hole approximately .12" (4 mm) in diameter can be drilled at the end of the crack so it will not extend further. See Illustration 2. This procedure will permit the use of the existing cylinder block instead of installation of a new cylinder block.
