Description of Change: An improved solenoid has been released by Jacobs Vehicle Systems. The Jake Brake engine retarder depends on the free flow of engine oil for operation. A "hanging on" condition will exist when the engine oil is cold at initial startup. The recommended solution to this condition is to refer to the Jacobs Vehicle Systems Professional Driver Techniques and Owner's Manual which states "Since the Jake depends on the free flow of engine oil for operation, be sure to let the engine warm up before switching it on."
In response to this condition, Jacobs Vehicle Systems has updated the design of the solenoid associated with the 1999 model year 3406E Engine Brake in order to ease the flow of oil even further.
Adaptable To: The improved 163-1533 Solenoid part number has not changed. The improved solenoid can be identified by a date code marking of F9 or higher (F9, G9, H9, etc.) The improved solenoid is effective with the serial numbers shown above and adaptable to earlier engines.
