Description of Change: Trucks with Caterpillar 1999 Model Year heavy duty truck engines and the Eaton 18 speed AutoShift transmission (or the Eaton 10 speed AutoShift transmission if engine Top Engine Limit (TEL) is programmed above 1900 rpm) may under certain conditions experience engine stall due to engine retarding below low idle. The specific circumstances which may lead to such a condition are the use of the "Auto Retarder in Cruise" feature, with the ADEM 2000 ECM in cruise control, the engine retarder dash switch in the "on" position, and the Eaton AutoShift transmission being manually downshifted. The situation may occur with NOV98, DEC98, or MAR99 FLASH files.
An electronic service tool (CAT ECAP or CAT ET) should be used to check the status of the ADEM 2000 programmable parameter "Auto Retarder in Cruise".
If the parameter is a nonzero value, then "Auto Retarder in Cruise" should be reprogrammed to 0 mph (or 0 km/h), thus disabling the feature.
If the "Auto Retarder in Cruise" parameter is already zero, no further action is necessary.
Disabling of the "Auto Retarder in Cruise" feature will prevent engine stall by activation of the engine retarder through and below engine low idle.
If Caterpillar Fleet Information Software (FIS) is used to maintain customer programmable parameter settings, the "Auto Retarder in Cruise" parameter should be programmed to "Disabled". The "Auto Retarder in Cruise" parameter is grouped with the cruise control parameters within FIS. Fleets which use the Master Engine Configuration feature within FIS should insure the "Auto Retarder in Cruise" parameter is disabled before updates and/or downloads are performed with FIS.
New ADEM 2000 FLASH files which address the engine stall issue will be available in mid-August 1999. The FLASH files will be referred to as the JUL99 software. Caterpillar 1999 model year C-10 (3CS1-Up), C-12 (2KS1-Up), and 3406E (1MM1-Up, 2WS1-Up) Truck Engines, used in combination with an Eaton AutoShift transmission, can be taken to a Caterpillar or TEPS dealer to have the engine ECM flashed with the appropriate JUL99 FLASH file. Affected engines will be flashed with the appropriate JUL99 FLASH file at no charge to the customer. The "Auto Retarder in Cruise" feature may be reprogrammed to the customer's desired nonzero value, only after the ADEM 2000 ECM has been flashed with the appropriate JUL99 FLASH file.
