Use Status Screen On Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) When Checking The Calibration Of The Timing And Rack Sensors; Correction To Systems Operation, Testing & Adjusting for 3406B (PEEC) Diesel Truck Engine, Form SENR3485-01

Usage:

3406B (PEEC) Truck Engines

Reference: Service Manual Module, Form 01, "Systems Operation Testing & Adjusting" for 3406B (PEEC) Diesel Truck Engine.

The "Display Status" screen must be used when checking the calibration of the rack and timing sensors. The "calibration" screens on the Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) service tool contain a row of liquid crystal display (LCD) segments. The segments only give a RELATIVE indication of whether the sensor is on the high side or low side of the calibration point. One segment "off" does not necessarily indicate that the sensor requires calibration. As a result, using the "calibration" screens for checking the calibration can lead to unnecessary adjustments of the rack and timing sensors.

If, after checking calibration, it is determined that the sensor must be recalibrated, or if a new sensor is installed, use the calibration screen and adjust as indicated until the display shows "Calibrated".

In the Reference, under the heading "Timing Position Sensor Calibration " on Page 106, Steps 8 (a) and (b), the "Timing Advance " reading is incorrect. The correct reading is 13.7 ± 0.4 degrees. Under the heading "Rack Position Sensor Calibration" on Page 108, Step 9 (a), the "Actual Rack Position" reading is incorrect. The correct reading is 9.50 ± 0.20 mm (.374 ± .008").
