SERVICE MAGAZINE, OCTOBER 15, 1979, PAGE 4. In the article, "Engine Oil Viscosity Changed To SAE 10W/30 For Shipment From All U. S. Factories," models and serial numbers of engines first shipped with SAE 10W/30 oil were given.
The chart which follows has models and serial numbers of 5.4" - and 6.25" - bore engines first shipped with SAE 10W/30 oil.
NOTE: Oil is drained from some engines before shipment.

The engine crankcase of all Caterpillar products except Natural Gas Engines will be filled with SAE 10W/30 oil at U.S. factories before shipment, except engine models which are drained for shipment. With this change, the viscosity of oil used at the factory will be the same for all Caterpillar products. Formerly, SAE 10W/30 oil was used only in 3208 Engines. The SAE 10W/30 oil has been used in 3208 Engines since first production, and is in effect on many other models with the serial numbers shown in the chart. For models not shown in the chart, the change will be in effect soon and will be shown on the Lubrication Notice fastened to the engine.
The API (American Petroleum Institute) classification of oil used is not changed. 3208 Engines use a type CC oil, and all other products use a type CD oil. The original SAE 10W/30 oil can be used until the first oil change interval in temperatures between-10°F (-23°C) and 90°F (32°C). If oil must be added during this interval, use the correct type (CC or CD) oil with a viscosity of SAE 10W/30 if available, or see the guide sent with the engine from the factory to find the correct viscosity oil to use according to the atmospheric temperature. Be sure to use oil with the correct API classification. This change in the original oil used at the factory has no effect on the basic lubrication instructions. Follow these instructions for oil change intervals, type and SAE grades of oil to use.
