New Larger Capacity Water Separator Is Available{1250}

Usage:

All Caterpillar Engines

Description of Change: A new water separator is available for Caterpillar Engines in applications where a large capacity water separator is needed.

The new water separator has a capacity of 1000 ml. The new water separator can be used in applications where the flow rate of fuel is as much as 300 gallons per hour (1135 liters per hour).

The new water separator will remove water from the fuel that the standard water separators will not. Water does not normally become emulsified with fuel, but under the right conditions some water will become emulsified with the fuel. The new water separator will remove this water from the fuel. The standard water separators will not.

The new water separator has a two-stage paper filter (an outer element and an inner element) that removes solid contaminants from the fuel in addition to water. The fuel first flows through the outer element where the water is condensed and solid contaminants are removed. The fuel then flows through the inner element which removes the condensed water drops and any solid contaminants. The water and solid contaminants can then be drained from the reservoir through the small valve in the bottom.

8N940 Water Separator.

Adaptable As: The 8N940 Water Separator (see the Illustration) is adaptable to all Caterpillar Engines. The charts that follows shows the replacement parts.

INSTALLATION: The 8N940 Water Separator must be installed on the inlet side of the fuel transfer pump and in series with the existing fuel filter. If possible, install the water separator in front of the fuel filter.

NOTE: 1-1/2" (38.1 mm) of clearance is needed to change elements.

Install a vent tube to the outlet valve on top of the base assembly. Use a .25" (6 mm) O.D. nylon 5P6011 Tubing or .19" (5 mm) I.D. vinyl 5P5999 Tubing.

MAINTENANCE: Drain the water and solid contaminants from the reservoir of the water separator each day before engine start-up. The procedure to drain the water from the water separator is as follows:

1. Remove the cap from the vent valve and open the vent valve.

2. Open the small valve at the bottom of the reservoir.

3. Drain until fuel comes out.

4. Close valve to the reservoir.

5. Close vent valve and install cap.

When the fuel pressure gauge reads "OUT", remove and install a new water separator element; if the fuel pressure gauge still reads "OUT" change the main fuel filter.
