Crankshaft Support Groups Are Available To Measure Bent Crankshafts{0653,1202}

Usage:

Crankshaft support groups (V-Blocks) are available to measure the bend in a crankshaft. Two 5P8637 Crankshaft Support Groups are needed. The support groups are put under two main bearing journals and the crankshaft is turned while a dial indicator is used to measure the T.I.R. (Total Indicator Reading) of other main bearing journals. Pads, which will not damage the surfaces of the crankshaft, are used on the surfaces of the support groups that are in contact with the crankshaft. Replacement 5P8636 Pads can be installed if needed.

At engine overhauls or if the bearing journals of the crankshaft are reground (machined), Caterpillar's recommendation is that the crankshaft be measured to see if it is bent.

A procedure to measure crankshaft bend is given in Guideline For Reusable Parts--"Procedure to Measure Bent Crankshafts", Form No. SEBF8030. Also given is the maximum dimension that a crankshaft can be bent and still can be used again.
