Reference: "Use Insert To Repair Bearing Seat In Water Pump Housing" Service Magazine, March 7, 1977.
Description of Change: In the water pump for these engines, the outer race of the larger bearing fits against a shoulder in the housing and is held in place by a retainer with four bolts. Some of these bearings have worked loose because the retainer was flexible enough to permit movement of the bearing race against the shoulder in the housing. This wears the shoulder and can cause leakage at the shaft seal. To prevent this problem, the water pump housings have been changed to increase the size of the shoulder, and a new retainer has been released. The larger shoulder in the housing gives a better seat for the bearing. The new retainer is 50% thicker for more strength, and will hold the bearing race tight against the shoulder.
In addition, an insert is now available to permit the repair of earlier housings that have a worn shoulder (bearing seat). Complete information to machine the housing and install the 5P7385 Insert is given in the reference article. When a repair is made, install the new 9N3033 Retainer to hold the bearing tighter and prevent added wear. Make a note with the reference article to be sure the new retainer is used.
Adaptable As: Direct replacement. The part numbers of the water pump housings are not changed. The new 9N3033 Retainer can be used in place of the former 4N1136 Retainer, which is canceled.
