Resurfaced Cylinder BlocksAnd Heads{1201,1101,1000}

Usage:

All 1100 Series, 3100 Series, And 3208 Engines

Reference: Service Magazine, March 8, 1982, Page 3. Put a mark through the article "Resurfaced Cylinder Blocks And Heads." Make a reference to this article. Some of the information in the earlier article was not correct.

Caterpillar resurfaces (machines a new surface) cylinder blocks and cylinder heads for remanufactured engines when it is necessary to give a better junction between the cylinder block and heads. Resurfaced cylinder blocks and heads have an identification mark on them as shown in the illustrations.

It is possible that only one deck (side) of the block will be resurfaced. If this is done, only the side that was resurfaced will have the identification mark on it.

The original and minimum resurfaced dimensions for cylinder blocks and heads on these engines are shown in the chart. Illustrations 1 and 3 show where to measure for these dimensions. Dimension B can be measured from the head surface through the nozzle bore. Do not measure this dimension from the nozzle counterbore.

Illustration 1. Location of dimension A and the identification mark on the cylinder block.

Illustration 2. Location of View B-B and the identification mark on the cylinder head.

Illustration 3. Location of dimension B.

There is also a minimum for the total of dimensions A and B. This minimum total of 418.26 mm (16.467") must be checked any time a resurfaced block deck and resurfaced cylinder head are used on the same side. This dimension is necessary to prevent piston to valve contact.

Piston projection must be considered when resurfaced cylinder blocks are used. Piston projection (the amount the pistons extend above the deck surface of the block), must be 0.43 ± 0.46 mm (.017 ± .018"). This dimension is the same for new or resurfaced cylinder blocks.

The dimensions in this article can be used as a guide any time a cylinder block or head are resurfaced. Also, the original specification for flatness must still be held. This specification is 0.15 mm (.006") for the total length and a maximum of 0.08 mm (.003") for any 152.4 mm (6.00") length.
