Remove and Install Water Temperature Regulators

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to the Tools And Shop Products Guide, NENG2500, for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Drain the coolant from the engine into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

2. Loosen hose clamps (1). Remove three bolts and washers (3).

3. Remove water temperature regulator housing (2) and water temperature regulator manifold (4) as a single unit.

4. Remove gasket (5) from water temperature regulator manifold (4).

5. Remove four bolts and washers (6). Separate water temperature regulator housing (2) from water temperature regulator manifold (4).

6. Remove gasket (7) from water temperature regulator manifold (4).

7. Remove two water temperature regulators (8) from water temperature regulator housing (2).

8. Remove two lip seals (9) from water temperature regulator housing (2).

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the water temperature regulators.

9. Install two lip seals (9) in the water temperature regulator housing with Tool (A) until the seals are in the housing counterbore seat.

NOTICE

The water temperature regulators must be installed in the water temperature regulator housing, as shown, or the engine will over heat.

10. Install two water temperature regulators (8) in water temperature regulator housing (2), as shown.

11. Put gasket (7) in position between water temperature regulator housing (2) and water temperature regulator manifold (4).

12. Put water temperature regulator housing (2) in position on water temperature regulator manifold (4). Install four bolts and washers (6) and tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 ± 9 N·m (37 ± 7 lb ft).

13. Install gasket (5) on water temperature regulator manifold (4).

14. Put water temperature regulator housing (2) and water temperature regulator manifold (4) in position on the engine.

15. Install three bolts and washers (3). Tighten hose clamps (1).
