Crankshaft

Usage:

Remove Crankshaft

start by:

a) remove flywheel housing

b) remove timing gear cover

c) remove pistons

TYPICAL EXAMPLE

1. Remove all of the main bearing caps (1), except number 4 main bearing cap.

TYPICAL EXAMPLE

2. Fasten a hoist to the crankshaft, and remove the last main bearing cap.

3. Remove the crankshaft from the cylinder block as shown.

4. Remove the crankshaft main bearings from the cylinder block and main bearing caps.

5. Remove the crankshaft gear (2), using tool group (A).

Install Crankshaft

1. Heat the crankshaft drive gear and install it on the crankshaft. Maximum temperature to be used on crankshaft gear is 600°F (316°C).

2. Install the bearing half, with the oil groove and oil hole, in the cylinder block. Install the other half of the bearing in the bearing cap. Put clean oil on the bearings.

3. Fasten a hoist to the crankshaft and put it into position in the cylinder block. The timing marks (1) on the crankshaft gear and camshaft gear must be in alignment as shown.

4. Install the number 4 bearing cap to hold the crankshaft in place and remove the hoist.

5. Install the thrust bearings (2) in the cylinder block. The words (this side to block) are on one side of the thrust bearing. This side of the bearing must be toward the cylinder block.

6. Make a measurement of the main bearing clearance, using wire (A). Put the wire between the crankshaft and the bearing, and install the main bearing cap as shown.

7. Put clean oil on the threads of the fastening bolts for the main bearing caps. Install and tighten the bolts to 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4,1 ± 0,4 mkg). Put a mark on each bolt and on the cap, then tighten each bolt 90° more from the mark on the cap.

8. Remove the bearings caps and make a measurement of the wire. Main bearing clearance must be .0030 to .0059 in. (0,076 to 0,150 mm).

9. Install the main bearing caps with the number on the cap towards the same number on the surface to which the oil pan plate fastens. Install and tighten the fastening bolts to 30 ± 3 lb.ft. (4,1 ± 0,4 mkg). Put a mark on bolt and on the cap, then tighten each bolt 90° from the mark on the cap.

10. Make a measurement of the crankshaft end play (thrust bearing clearance), using tool group (C). End play must be .0025 to .0145 in. (0,064 to 0,368 mm). Maximum permissible end play is .025 in. (0,64 mm).

end by:

a) install pistons

b) install timing gear cover

c) install flywheel housing
