Timing Gears

Usage:

Remove Timing Gears

preparatory step:

a) remove flywheel housing

1. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise (as viewed from rear of engine) to top dead center compression stroke No. 1 piston as outlined in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.

2. Remove the timing pin and cover from the accessory drive housing. Install the timing pin through hole in housing and into slot in fuel injection pump camshaft.

3. Using a 3/8" -16NC forged eyebolt, remove the camshaft driveshaft (3).

NOTICE

Do not attempt to rotate the crankshaft with camshaft driveshaft or any of the timing gears removed and the camshafts installed. Piston and valve interference will occur with possible resulting damage to the engine.

4. Remove the camshaft drive gear retaining bolts (2). Remove the camshaft drive gear (1), lock, and thrust washer.

5. Remove the camshaft drive idler gear retaining nuts. Remove the idler gear (4), lock, and thrust washer (5). Using tool setup (A), remove the bearing from the camshaft drive idler gear.

6. Remove the camshaft and accessory drive idler gear retaining bolts. Remove the camshaft and accessory drive idler gear (7), lock, and thrust washer (6). Using tool setup (B), remove the bearing from the camshaft and accessory drive idler gear (7).

7. Remove the cluster gear retaining bolts. Remove cluster gear (8), lock, and thrust washer. Using tool setup (C), remove the bearing from cluster gear.

Install Timing Gears

1. Using tool setup (C), install the bearing in cluster gear. Lubricate the bearing with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Position the cluster gear on engine with timing mark on gear aligned with timing mark on crankshaft as shown. Install thrust washer, lock, and retaining bolts.

2. Using tool setup (B), install the bearing in camshaft and accessory drive idler gear. Lubricate the bearing with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Position the camshaft and accessory drive idler gear on engine with timing mark on gear aligned with timing mark on cluster gear as shown. Install the thrust washer, lock, and retaining bolts.

3. Using tool setup (A), install the bearing in camshaft drive idler gear. Lubricate the bearing with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Position the camshaft drive idler gear on engine with timing mark on gear aligned with timing mark on camshaft and accessory drive idler gear as shown. Install the thrust washer, lock, and retaining nuts.

NOTICE

When installing the camshaft drive idler gear thrust washer, make sure the recess in thrust washer is toward the front of engine.

4. Lubricate the camshaft drive gear bearing with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Position the camshaft drive gear on engine with timing mark on gear aligned with timing mark on camshaft drive idler gear as shown. Install the thrust washer, lock, and retaining bolts.

5. Install the camshaft driveshaft with the blind spline on top.

6. Remove the timing pin from fuel injection pump camshaft. Install the timing pin and cover in storage position.

concluding steps:

a) install flywheel housing

b) check fuel injection pump camshaft timing as outlined in TESTING AND ADJUSTING
