D348 VEHICULAR ENGINE Caterpillar

Rear Timing Gears And Plate

Usage:

Remove Rear Timing Gears And Plate

preparatory step:

a) remove flywheel housing

1. Remove the right valve cover. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise (as viewed from rear of engine) to top dead center compression stroke for No. 1 piston. Remove the timing pin from storage hole and install pin in timing slot in inlet camshaft.

2. Remove the fuel injection pump camshaft timing pin from its storage hole. Install the timing pin in timing hole in fuel injection pump camshaft.

3. Remove the air compressor drive idler gear (1) and thrust washers. Using tool setup (A), remove the idler gear inner bearing. Remove the idler gear outer bearing from flywheel housing.

4. Remove the idler gear (2), shaft and inner thrust washer. Remove the outer thrust washer, bolts and lock from the flywheel housing. Using tool setup (B), remove the bearing from idler gear.

5. Remove the oil pump drive idler gear (3), retaining bolts, lock and washer from the flywheel housing. Remove the bearing from idler gear using tool setup (C).

6. Remove the left turbocharger oil drain line. Remove the variable timing drive gear cover (4). Remove the timing plate mounting bolts and locks. Remove the O-ring seals (5), (6) and (7). Remove timing plate.

7. Remove oil line (8). Remove the camshaft drive idler gear (9), retaining bolts, lock and shaft. Using tool setup (D), remove the bearing from idler gear.

Install Rear Timing Gears And Plate

1. Install bearing in camshaft drive idler gear using tool setup (D). Install idler gear, shaft, retaining bolts and lock. Install oil line.

2. Position the timing plate on engine and install retaining bolts and locks. Install O-ring seals on oil tubes. Install variable timing drive gear cover. Install left turbocharger oil drain line.

3. Using tool setup (C), install bearing in oil pump drive idler gear. Install idler gear, retaining bolts, lock and washer on flywheel housing.

4. Using tool setup (B), install bearing in idler gear. Install outer thrust washer, bolts and lock on flywheel housing. Install idler gear, shaft and inner thrust washer. The "V" mark on idler gear should be aligned with "V" mark on the crankshaft gear.

NOTICE

Always be sure that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center compression stroke; the timing pin is installed in fuel injection pump camshaft; and the timing pin is installed in timing slot in right inlet camshaft before installing idler gear. Damage to engine can result if the above procedure is not followed.

5. Install air compressor drive idler gear outer bearing in flywheel housing using tool setup (A). Using tool setup (A), install idler gear inner bearing in adapter. Install the idler gear and thrust washers.

6. Remove all timing pins from their respective timing slots.

concluding steps:

a) install flywheel housing

b) check fuel injection pump camshaft timing as outlined in TESTING AND ADJUSTING

c) install right valve cover
