Main Shaft Assembly

Heat the bearing cones, gears and bearing inner race in oil, temperature not to exceed 240° F (115° C), to facilitate installation.

1. Install front support bearing (6) on the ahead drive shaft. Place outer race (5) on bearing (6).

2. Make certain the gear key is in the shaft and install the ahead driving gear, the spacer, and a bearing cup of thrust bearing (4). The smallest bore of the bearing cup is toward the ahead driving gear.

3. Install a bearing cone of thrust bearing (4) with the small diameter toward the ahead driving gear. Install the other bearing cone with the large diameter against the large diameter of the first bearing cone.

4. Place the cup spacer, the last bearing cup of thrust bearing (4) on the bearing cones and install the bearing retainer, locks and bolts.

5. Install the ahead shaft bearing inner race (3) on the astern drive shaft.

6. Place the assembled ahead drive shaft on the astern drive shaft.

7. Make certain the gear key is in the astern drive shaft and install the astern driving gear (2).

8. Place the spacer and a bearing cup of thrust bearing (1) on the astern drive shaft. The smallest bore of the bearing cup is toward the astern driving gear.

9. Install a bearing cone of thrust bearing (1) with the small diameter toward the astern driving gear. Install the other bearing cone with the large diameter against the large diameter of the first bearing cone.

10. Place the cup spacer, the last bearing cup of thrust bearing (1) on the bearing cones and install the bearing retainer, locks and bolts.
