This is an initial order recommendation only, and the ultimate responsibility for ordering the total number of parts needed to satisfy the program lies with the dealer. |
ACTION REQUIRED
Confirm that suspect connecting rod assemblies are installed in the engine being serviced. Per instructions below, replace existing suspect connecting rods. The suspect connecting rods were manufactured from April 1, 2011 to December 31, 2012. The connecting rod manufacture date can be determined as follows: Refer to Image 1 showing the manufacturing date code example. The middle line contains two pair of digits. The first pair of digits represents the production year and the second pair represents the production month. Example: April 2011 = (11 04). Reference the attached Rework Procedure to replace suspect connecting rod assemblies. |

1. Remove fuel injector lines, valve mechanism cover, valve mechanism group, and cylinder head group. Note: It is not necessary to remove fuel injectors from the cylinder head assembly to perform this rework procedure. Install fluid line connection protection on any open lines to prevent debris entry. 2. Reference Disassembly and Assembly SENR5598 for details of engine disassembly and assembly. 3. Disconnect turbocharger oil supply tube assembly and oil drain tube assembly from the turbocharger and cylinder block assembly. 4. Remove the turbo charger and exhaust manifold. 5. Remove cylinder head assembly. 6. Remove engine oil sump and engine oil pump pickup tube assembly. 7. Remove piston and connecting rod assemblies from the cylinder block. Recommend replacing rod assemblies one cylinder at a time to ensure correct mating parts are re-installed in each cylinder. Do not remove cylinder liner. a. Remove connecting rod bolt nuts and rod cap. b. Install bolt thread protection on connecting rod bolts to prevent damage to crankshaft journal. c. Carefully remove piston & rod gp. from cylinder bore. Re-install connecting rod cap to rod and finger tighten nuts. Do not damage the piston cooling jets while removing piston and connecting rod assembly. Do not remove piston rings from the piston. d. Remove piston pin retaining clips. Do not reuse the retaining clips. e. Remove piston pin and rod assembly from piston. 8. Assemble replacement connecting rod to piston assembly using existing piston pin. Reference SENR5598 Pistons and Connecting - Assemble. Do not remove the piston rings. It is not necessary to clean the piston ring grooves for this rework procedure. The piston rings are not replaced in this procedure. 9. Install the pistons and connecting rods into cylinder block assembly. Refer to SENR5598 Disassembly and Assembly, "Pistons and Connecting Rods - Install" 10. Visually confirm that the piston cooling jets were not damaged during the removal or installation of the piston - rod assemblies. 11. The remaining engine assembly is the reverse of above steps. Reference SENR5598 for details on engine assembly, torque specifications and valve lash setting specifications. Note: Do not reuse cylinder head bolts, O-ring seals or gaskets on joints that were separated during this rework procedure. 12. Refill fluids. Run engine. Check for fluid leaks. Complete SIMSi entry noting connecting rod assemblies were replaced per this support program. |
