Drive Chains

Usage:


Rear Axle and Drive Chains
(1) Master link. (2) Axle. (3) Master link. (4) Drive sprocket. (5) Chain. (6) Drive sprocket. (7) Chain.

Remove Drive Chains

1. Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Shut the engine off and apply the parking brake.

2. Remove differential cover (8) from the rear of the machine.

3. Loosen four nuts (9) securing the axle to the machine frame.

4. Loosen two lock nuts (10) on tension bolts (11).

5. Turn two tension bolts (11) clockwise to lower the axle slightly and remove tension from chains (5) and (7). Be sure to turn the two bolts equally.

6. Retighten two lock nuts (10) and four nuts (9).

7. Move the machine forward or backward slightly, to position master link (1) at the top of drive sprocket (4).

8. Stop the machine. Shut the engine off and apply the parking brake.

9. Block the front and rear wheels on both sides to prevent the machine from rolling.

10. Remove two cotter pins securing side bar (12) to master link (1). Remove the side bar.

11. Remove master link (1) from chain (5).

12. Tie a wire cable to one end of chain (5), as shown. Feed the cable end of the chain down into the lower drive assembly while pulling the other end of the chain out.

13. Remove the chain and untie the cable. Leave the cable in the lower drive assembly. This will be used later to help install the chain.

14. Repeat steps 7 through 13 to remove chain (7) and master link (3) from the other side of axle (2).

15. Examine the two drive sprockets (4) and (6). If any teeth are broken, or if the sprockets show excessive wear, they must be replaced with new parts.

16. Wash the two chains (5) and (7) thoroughly in diesel fuel.

17. Lay each chain out straight, and measure its length. Length of a new chain (with master link installed) is 2476 mm (97.5 in.).

18. If either chain has stretched to 2553 mm (100.5 in.) or more, it must be replaced with a new part.

19. Check the chains and master links for worn or damaged parts, rusting, or frozen links. If the chains are damaged or have excessive wear, they must be replaced.

20. Soak the chains in the lubricating oil specified in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Wipe off excess oil before installing the chains.

Install Drive Chains

1. Secure drive sprockets (4) and (6) to the axle, if these parts have been removed.

2. Tie one end of chain (5) to the cable, which was left in the lower drive assembly during chain removal.

3. Feed the chain into the lower drive assembly. Pull the cable to bring the chain up to drive sprocket (4).

4. Bring the ends of the chain together at the top of drive sprocket (4), using the teeth to hold the chain. If the ends of the chain do not meet at the top of drive sprocket (4), the chain may be installed wrong at the lower sprocket.

5. Insert master link (1) into the chain ends, as shown.

6. Install side bar (12) onto master link (1). Secure with two cotter pins.

7. Repeat steps 2 through 6 to install chain (7) and master link (3) over drive sprocket (6).

8. Loosen four nuts (9) securing the axle to the machine frame.

9. Loosen two lock nuts (10) on tension bolts (11).

10. Turn two tension bolts (11) counterclockwise to raise the axle and tighten the chains. Be sure to turn the two bolts equally.

11. Chain tension should be set to allow 19 mm (.75 in.) deflection in the chains, as shown.

12. Retighten two lock nuts (10) and four nuts (9).

NOTE: Recheck chain tension after eight hours of operation. Repeat steps 8 through 12 if further adjustment is necessary.
