SPICER/NAPCO AXLE Caterpillar

Gear Case Assembly And Installation:

Usage:

1. Carefully press the needle roller bearing into the output shaft until it is seated against the shoulder.

2. Using new gasket, mount the carrier adapter on the carrier assembly and install the mounting bolts and lockwashers. Torque to 160-170 ft. lbs.

3. Install the output sleeve on the pinion shaft.

4. Lubricate the oil seal lip and install the seal in the carrier adapter with the seal lip toward the pinion bearing.

5. Install the output shaft into the sleeve and install the pinion mounting bolt. Torque to 200-220 ft. lbs.

6. Lubricate the shift rod oil seal lip and install the seal in the gear case with the seal lip toward the inside of case.

7. Carefully slide the shift rod thru the oil seal, case bore, shift fork, and into the case.

8. Install the shift fork lock screw and lockwire.

9. Press the ball bearing onto the input shaft until seated against shoulder.

NOTE: Bearing to be installed with snap ring on outer race away from gear end of shaft. Bearing and shaft surfaces must be clean to insure proper bearing seating.

10. Install the snap ring onto the input shaft against the ball bearing.

11. Temporarily remove the snap ring from the outer race of the input shaft bearing and position the shaft inside the case. Push the input shaft and outward through its bore until the bearing snap ring groove is outside the case. Reinstall the bearing snap ring in the outer race and push the bearing in until the snap ring is against the case.

12. Position the sliding low speed gear on the shift fork inside the case and swing the shift fork and gear into its correct working position. Slide the shift fork into the high range position to engage the gear teeth of the the input shaft and sliding gear. Install the shift rod detent ball, spring, and plug to hold the shift fork and gear in the high range position.

13. Press the rear ball bearing onto the intermediate shaft until seated against shoulder.

NOTE: Bearing and shaft surfaces must be clean to insure proper bearing seating.

14. Position high range and low range gears inside case and slide the intermediate shaft thru the bearing bore and gears until rear bearing is in position in its bore.

15. Using new gasket, install rear intermediate bearing cap, mounting bolts, and lockwashers. Torque to 20-25 ft.lbs.

16. Install bearing spacer and front bearing on intermediate shaft. Install washer and slotted nut and tighten to insure proper bearing seating. Secure slotted nut with cotter pin.

17. Using new gasket, install front intermediate bearing cap, mounting bolts, and lockwashers and torque to 20-25 ft. lbs.

18. Using new gasket, install hydraulic motor adapter, mounting bolts, and lockwashers and torque to 30-35 ft. lbs.

19. Install inspection cover, mounting bolts, and lockwashers.

20. Using new gasket, carefully install gear case onto carrier adapter, rotating input shaft slightly to engage output shaft and sliding gear. Install mounting bolts and lockwashers and torque to 30-35 ft.lbs.

21. Install gear case-to-axle housing brace mounting bolts. Install input sleeve and hydraulic motor. Fill gear case and axle housing with lubricant to correct levels.
