745C (S/N: LFK1-UP; TFK1-UP)

Automatic Retarding Control (ARC) Grade Mode is configurable in Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool between "Short" and "Long" modes. Use the following recommendations to prevent elevated brake oil temperatures on your machine.

Note: The ARC Grade Mode defaults to ARC Short Grade Mode in Cat ET.

Description

ARC Long Grade Mode targets a retarding level that can run continuously within each system’s cooling capability.

ARC Short Grade Mode is a performance mode that targets a retarding level that allows running above the normal ARC level, until the brakes get warm:

  • ARC Short Grade Mode allows the truck to remain 1 gear above continuous capability for grades that have a continuous capability gear of 5 or greater

  • ARC Short Grade Mode allows the truck to remain 2 gears above continuous capability for grades that have a continuous capability gear of 4 or lower

Application Recommendations

Table 1
ARC Short Grade Mode Application Recommendation
Downhill Slope %  Maximum Grade Length to Run ARC Short Grade Mode
10%  300 m (1000 ft)
15%  300 m (1000 ft)
20%  50 m (165 ft)
25%  30 m (100 ft)
30%  30 m (100 ft)

ARC Long Grade Mode should be used in the following conditions:

  • Grade lengths are longer than specified in the table above , OR

  • Payload weights are more than rated capacity, OR

  • Any sites where brake dampers have been replaced or have discolored brake oil

ARC Short Grade Mode use is appropriate in the following conditions:

  • Operating on downhill grades not exceeding distances specified in the table above, and

  • Payload weights are at or below operating payload
