Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
G3520C Generator Sets with a gearbox, and equipped with the 370-3968 Flexible Coupling Gp, on the generator side, may suffer from high vibration due to early wear out of the 370-3964 Inner Coupling in the coupling group.
Solution
Research is ongoing to understand the root cause of early hour deterioration of the coupling elements, in the gearbox application, and identify an effective solution.
The current recommendation is to implement generator protection devices, configured to operate within site system requirements, that will prevent harsh operation of the generator set. Generator protection for synchronizing, reverse power, and under-excitation should be implemented with as stringent settings as possible, and actions should also be implemented to prevent repetitive shutdowns due to alarms like detonation.
Minor deterioration of coupling element, such as small, low depth cracking or discoloration does not necessitate that coupling element failure is imminent or in need of replacement. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS3401 for more detailed coupling element inspection and replacement guidelines.
If coupling deterioration is determined to be unacceptable for use, based on guidelines, process a ticket with the Dealer Solution Network (DSN) with pictures of deteriorating element, linear vibration measurements (current and also at commissioning preferably), basic and notable history of operation, protective relay settings, and protective relay history files. Replace the inner coupling with the same part number, and save failed element for factory analysis.
