Think Safety

Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Improper operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair of this product can be dangerous and could result in injury or death.

Do not operate or perform lubrication, maintenance, or repair on this product until you have read and understood the Tool Operating Manual.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this manual and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons.

The hazards are identified by the “Safety Alert Symbol” and followed by a “Signal Word” such as “DANGER”, “WARNING”, or “CAUTION”. The Safety Alert “WARNING” label is shown below.

A non-exhaustive list of operations that may cause product damage are identified by "NOTICE" labels on the product and in this publication.

Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. The warnings in this publication and on the product are, therefore, not all inclusive. If a tool, procedure, operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used, the operator must be sure that the procedures are safe. The operator must also be sure that the product will not be damaged or made unsafe by any unspecified procedures.

The information, specifications, and illustrations in this publication are based on information that was available at the time that the publication was written. The specifications, torques, pressures, measurements, adjustments, illustrations, and other items can change at any time. These changes can affect the service that is given to the product. Obtain the complete and most current information before you start any job.

When replacement parts are required for this product, Caterpillar recommends using Cat replacement parts or parts with equivalent specifications including, but not limited to, physical dimensions, type, strength, and material.

Introduction

The 477-3197 Piston Ring Groove Gauge is used to check the top ring groove of pistons used in C-27 Engines. The gauge is only used on steel crown, two piece pistons.

The 480-4204 Piston Ring Groove Gauge Group includes the 477-3197 Piston Ring Groove Gauge, 6V-3073 Storage Case, foam inserts for storage case, NEHS1227 Tool Operating Manual and NEEG3174 Storage Case Decal.

The 477-3197 Piston Ring Groove Gauge is a Go/NoGo design. If the gauge passes through the top ring groove of the piston, the piston cannot be reused. If the gauge does not pass through the ring groove, the piston can be reused.

Checking Procedure

  1. Thoroughly clean the top ring groove of the piston.

  2. Slide the 477-3197 Piston Ring Groove Gauge into the ring groove. The gauge should be aligned with the pin bore, as shown in Illustration 5.

  3. Turn the gauge 90 degrees and check the ring groove again.

  4. If the gauge does not pass through the ring groove, the piston can be reused.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Clean the tooling after each use, using a non-solvent based cleaner.

Storage

  1. Store the tooling in a clean, dry location to prevent rust or corrosion. Tooling can be damaged by moisture or high humidity.

  2. The tool should be stored in the most stable position.

Tool Disposal

At the end of the operational life of the tool, destroy the tool and dispose of scrap.
