Introduction
This Special Instruction provides instructions for installing the Operator ID kit. The Operator ID System provides the owner with the ability to identify who is operating a machine and hours of use, or verify when a technician is servicing a machine. The system consists of a module and wiring harness to allow connection to the machine +Battery, Ground, and J1939. The Operator ID System is proposed for use on all machines, both Caterpillar and competitive brands, providing a fleet solution for equipment owners. This kit is offered as an after-market attachment.
Note: It is important to read this entire Special Instruction before beginning the installation of the Operator ID System.
Important Safety Information
Do not perform any procedure in this special instruction until you have read this special instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures should also be observed.
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons.Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Ensure that any tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique you use that is not recommended by Caterpillar is safe. Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures that are used.

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment. To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system. Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on. |
Power Locked and Tagged out
Turn off the engine with the keyswitch to the "OFF" position. Insure that the machine has been turned off and is locked and tagged out.
Use proper Lock out and Tag out procedures. Attach a "Do Not Operate" warning tag to the machine start switch or the controls before you perform any service to the machine. These warning tags Special Instruction, SEHS7332 are available from your Caterpillar Dealer.
Electrical Safety
"DO NOT" operate or work on a machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in this manual and the Machine Control and Installation Guide. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Cat® Dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.
Note: During installation, it is important to protect wiring in key locations. Key locations are any area where the wiring could be nicked or cut and come in contact with the chassis. Avoid installation practices where there could be excessive flexing, chafing, or cutting of the wiring.
Overview
The Operator ID System allows a Remote User the ability to identify the operator of a machine or technician servicing a machine.

This kit can be retrofitted for many brands and types of mobile equipment and is offered as an after-market attachment on both Caterpillar and competitive brands, providing a fleet solution for equipment owners.

This kit is offered as an after-market attachment. This kit is not certified for Marine applications. This kit is not authorized for use on L,M,N, and O vehicle categories under UNECE Regulation 10.
Electrical Requirements
This control is designed to operate on 12 V DC or 24 V DC, negative ground.
Installation
To execute the operational validation of the Operator ID System after installation, it is necessary to engage the end customer to administer the feature remotely. Enabling this capability has two prerequisites:
- VisionLink access to the asset security feature
- Supporting Product Link device
Installation Procedure
The process for installing this retrofit kit is described briefly here and in detail below. The steps to be followed include:
- Determine the mounting location of the Operator ID Module, Recommended location for the module is underneath the dashboard and the probe in the dashboard.
- Mount the Operator ID Module.
- Install probe.
- Connecting the wiring to the machine.
- Validate the Operator ID Module operation.

Operator ID Network Topologies
The Operator ID Module can be installed using three (3) different configurations:
- Operator ID Installation with No Existing Network.
- Operator ID Installation as a Drop on an Existing Network.
- Operator ID Installation as an Extension to an Existing Network.

The Operator ID can be connected to an existing network as a stub.

The Operator ID can be connected to an existing network as an extension. The network terminating resistor would be removed and the socket used to connect to the ECM.

Installation of Operator ID Module
Given the wide range of machines to which the Operator ID system can be applied, a standardized mounting method is not possible. Some of the considerations to be made when selecting an Operator ID mounting location include:
- Access to 12 V or 24 V as supplied by the ignition system.
- Access to battery ground.
- Access to the data link serving the Product Link radio within reach of the probe
304.8 mm (12 inch) .
There are two mounting holes for the Operator ID Module, one at each top corner. Use Diagram for the measurements to drill the 2 mounting holes. Use a drill bit to accommodate a size M8 bolt that corresponds to each of the mounting points.

Using a Digital Volt Meter, perform the following checks as shown in Table 3.
Operational Validation
- Turn off the engine by moving the key switch to the off position.
- Take note of the ID number listed on the Operator ID button.
Note: Refer to Illustration 10 for Electrical Wiring Diagram
- Attach the Operator ID button to the operator ID reader.
- Turn on the engine by moving the key switch to the on position.
- After 5 minutes, find the operator ID number in VisionLink.
- Verify that the Operator ID number in VisionLink is the same number listed on the Operator ID button attached to the Operator ID reader.
- If the Operator ID numbers are not the same, verify that you are operating in good cellular coverage. Ensure that the Operator ID Module is installed correctly.
- Remove the Operator ID button from the Operator ID reader.
- Turn off the engine by moving the key switch to the off position.
- After 5 minutes, verify in VisionLink that no operator ID number is listed.
