Start By:
- Remove exhaust manifold.
- Remove fuel rail and fuel manifold.
- Remove fuel filter base.
- Remove rocker arm and shaft.
- Remove water temperature regulator.
- Remove aftercooler.
- Remove alternator (if equipped).
- Remove fuel injection pump.

- Remove bolt (2) and belt tensioner (1).

- Attach a suitable lifting device to lifting eye (3) and lifting plate (6). Remove cylinder head (5) and alternator support bracket (7). The combined weight of lifting eye (3), lifting plate (6), cylinder head (5), and alternator support bracket (7) is approximately

- Remove bolt (12), stud (13), and bracket (14).

- Remove bolts (15) and lifting eye (3).
- Remove studs (16) and cover (17).

- Remove bolts (18), alternator support bracket (7), and lifting plate (6).
- Install cylinder head (5) in the reverse order of removal.
- Apply Tooling (A) to both sides of the washers and to only the threaded portions of bolts (8.)
- Tighten bolts (8) in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5 to a torque of
160 ± 15 N·m (118 ± 11 lb ft) . - Retighten bolts (8) in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5 to a torque of
160 ± 15 N·m (118 ± 11 lb ft) . Tighten bolts (8) by an additional 90° in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5. - Loosen bolts (8) until the washers are loose under the bolt heads.
- Repeat Steps 1.b through 1.c.
- Tighten bolts (4) in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5 to a torque of
28 ± 7 N·m (248 ± 62 lb in) .
Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g03836094 Examine bolts (8) for wear or for damage. Refer to Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8301, "Inspection and Reuse of Critical Fasteners Used in All Engines". Replace with new bolts (8), if necessary. Note: Top gasket face of the cylinder block, the cylinder liners, and the bottom face of cylinder head (5) must be free of oil, fuel, water, and other contaminants before assembly.
