Examine bolts (8) for wear or for damage. Refer to Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8301, "Inspection and Reuse of Critical Fasteners Used in All Engines". Replace with new bolts (8), if necessary.

Note: Top gasket face of the cylinder block, the cylinder liners, and the bottom face of cylinder head (5) must be free of oil, fuel, water, and other contaminants before assembly.

    1. Apply Tooling (A) to both sides of the washers and to only the threaded portions of bolts (8.)

    2. Tighten bolts (8) in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5 to a torque of 160 ± 15 N·m (118 ± 11 lb ft).

    3. Retighten bolts (8) in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5 to a torque of 160 ± 15 N·m (118 ± 11 lb ft). Tighten bolts (8) by an additional 90° in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5.

    4. Loosen bolts (8) until the washers are loose under the bolt heads.

    5. Repeat Steps 1.b through 1.c.

    6. Tighten bolts (4) in the numerical sequence shown in illustration 5 to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (248 ± 62 lb in).
