Crankcase Pressure Is High

Usage:

The engine is equipped with a Crankcase Breathers. The pressure sensor monitors the level of crankcase pressure. The blowby vents through the crankcase breathers into the atmosphere. The crankcase breathers contain a filter element. The filter element filters the blowby. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the replacement of the filter.

Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a high crankcase pressure. Also, use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes is active.

E1036(1)  High Crankcase Pressure  The Engine Control Module (ECM) activates this code when the crankcase pressure has exceeded the limit for a programmed period. The amber warning lamp is illuminated.
The code is logged.
Engine power is derated.
This code can be caused by an obstructed tube, an obstructed filter, or an obstructed hose. 
E1036(2)  High Crankcase Pressure

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.

1. Check the Engine Oil Level
 

Oil Level
 

Result: The engine oil level is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: The engine oil level is high.

Repair: Troubleshoot the cause of the incorrect oil level.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
 

2. Check for Plugged Crankcase Breathers

A plugged crankcase breather will cause excessive crankcase pressure.
 

Plugged Crankcase Breather 

Result: The crankcase breathers are plugged.

Repair: Replace the fumes disposal filter according to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Crankcase Breather - Clean".

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

Result: The crankcase breathers are not plugged.

Proceed to Test Step 3.
 

3. Check for a Faulty Pressure Sensor

A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

C. Remove the oil filler cap.

D. Monitor the crankcase pressure and the atmospheric pressure in Cat ET.

Result: The crankcase pressure is within 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) of the atmospheric pressure.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The crankcase pressure is not within 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) of the atmospheric pressure.

Repair: Replace the crankcase pressure sensor.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
 

4. Internal Engine Problem

Damaged pistons or rings can cause too much pressure in the crankcase. This condition will cause the engine to run rough. There will be more than the normal quantity of fumes (blowby) entering the crankcase breathers. The crankcase breathers can then more quickly become restricted, causing oil leakage at gaskets and seals that would not normally have leakage. Blowby can also be caused by worn valve guides or by a failed turbocharger seal.

A. To determine whether the piston rings leak, measure the crankcase blowby. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for additional information.
 

Damaged or Worn Engine Parts
 

Result: There are worn or damaged engine parts.

Repair: Repair or replace the worn or damaged parts.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
