Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until the information has been read and understood.

This Special Instruction describes the rework procedure for adding a dowel pin to the joint between the turbocharger cartridge and turbine housing.

Required Parts

1A-2036 Dowel
243-2975 Clamp As
302-6504 Bellows
372-5858 Band Clamp

Procedure

Note: Apply the following procedure to both turbochargers on the engine. Follow this procedure for replacement or during overhaul for the turbocharger cartridge.

  1. Prior to changing out the clamps, loosen the two bellows that connect to the turbine housing, so that the turbo is isolated and there is no force pulling on the turbine housing.

  2. Verify that the turbo housing is aligned properly. Make sure that the two mating flanges are flush all the way around.

Note: If necessary, loosen the turbo cartridge bolts to allow the cartridge to move and align the cartridge flange with the turbo flange.

  3. The housing must be retained although the clamp is off. Use a C-clamp to hold the housing in place.

  4. Install an old V-band clamp to be modified for use as a drill guide.

    (B) 6.5 mm (0.255 inch)
    (C) 19 mm (0.75 inch)

  5. Fabricate the drill guide using an old V-band clamp and weld a lead boss to the old V-band clamp. Ensure that this boss is centered on the old V-band clamp.

  6. Set the drill guide in place for drilling. Drill a hole with a 6.5 mm drill bit to a maximum drill depth of 12.5 mm (0.492 inch).

Note: The drilled hole must be centered between the flange halves on the top side of the flanges.

  7. Set dowel pin (4) in place.

Note: Pin must be clearance fit, not pressed fit. The dowel should not be over a 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) maximum protrusion.

  8. Once the dowel pin is in place, install the 372-5858 Band Clamp following Engine News, SEBD9761, "A New Band Clamp Is Available for Turbochargers on Certain 3500 and C175-16 Engines".

Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly for the engine for the procedure to install the 302-6504 Bellows.
