Introduction
This Special Instruction provides the Product Shipping and Handling Guidelines for Certain Uninterruptible Power Supplys (UPS).
Do not perform any procedure in this special instruction until you have read this special instruction and understand this information.
NOTICE |
---|
The flywheel is shipped with bearing retainers that are installed in order to relieve the bearing of transient forces that may be encountered during shipping and handling. Do not attempt to remove the retainers or operate the unit until the unit is properly bolted to the floor anchors. The bearing retainers are to be removed only by Caterpillar authorized service personnel during the final inspection and before initial pre-startup. |
NOTICE |
---|
Damage to the flywheel units can occur if the rotor for the flywheel is turning during the process of moving the unit. Do not move the flywheel units without the bearing retainers installed. |
Important Safety Information
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.
A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.
Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Ensure that any tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique you use that is not recommended by Caterpillar is safe.
Personal injury or death can result from lifting, moving, and lowering heavy assemblies. A heavy assembly can slip and fall off the forks of the fork lift if the assembly is not properly balanced and secured onto the forks of the fork lift . Be sure that the assembly is properly balanced and secured on the forks of the fork lift. Be sure that the fork lift has the correct capacity to lift the stated weight of the assembly. For reference, the correct weight of the assembly is listed elsewhere within this document information. |
Crushing Hazard. Use extreme care when handling this equipment due to the uneven weight distribution of the cabinets. Locate the center of gravity symbols. Lift the cabinets only in the locations that are shown. Test the lift and balance the cabinets before transporting the cabinets. Maintain a minimum tilt from vertical at all times. Use a suitable material handling device in order to move the cabinets to the final destination. If a forklift is used, it must have a minimum capacity of 3 tons. The forks must have a width of 520.70 mm (20.50 inches) but needs to be less than 609.60 mm (24.00 inches). Failure to adhere to this warning can result in personal injury or death. |
Freight Handling Instructions - Cabinets and UPSs
Due to the sensitivity of electronic components and skid weight of Caterpillar products, inland transportation must be performed by logistics providers utilizing "Air Ride Suspension Trailers" only. Caterpillar also prefers the use of truckload carriers (like a dedicated truck) to reduce the possibility of shipping damage. Caterpillar does not allow the use of transportation by the following modes of transportation:
- Train (rail) due to the high risk of product damage that can be caused by the movement of rail cars
- Flatbed trailers due to product exposure to elements and lack of an acceptable method of securing Active Power products without the possibility of damage
Caterpillar prepares each product shipment using bearing retainers to keep rotor weight off lower bearings and weight-rated foam skids to absorb vibration. For international shipments, products are normally crated for additional safety and protection.
Note: Receiving region can request that the units are not crated if being shipped via a dedicated container.
Some Caterpillar shipping skids may weigh over 1814.4 kg (4000 lb) each, therefore special handling from carriers is required as described below. Products cannot be double stacked.
Caterpillar utilizes a number of industry standard labels, stickers, and load tilt indicators to ensure the safe handling and arrival of the product. The receiving customer should pay attention to the labels for handling and the check the indicators to ensure that the tilt or shock indicators have not been triggered. Key points to note:
- Loading and Unloading must be done from marked locations on the product and skid due to weight instability. Pay attention to the label on the unit: "Warning: Unstable Load. Lift From This Side Only"
- The shipment must remain palletized and wrapped for delivery. Failure to do so may result in claims for loss and/or damage
- Keep load upright. Do not tip and do not tilt past 30 degrees. Each pallet is fitted with a tilt and lift sensor
- Use caution when moving and setting the product down, due to shock sensitivity. Each pallet is fitted with a shock sensor
- The shipment must be protected against elements and never be exposed to water
- Upon arrival every shipment should be inspected for damage and correct quantity before someone signs for the shipment. Carrier assumes all shipping responsibility and is expected to deliver the product in pre-shipment conditions, without any damages

Handling Indicators
Note: TiltWatch® and ShockWatch® are products and Registered trademarks of ShockWatch, INC.
TiltWatch®
Illustration 5 | g03722712 |
The TiltWatch® indicator should be on the 30 degree indicator for right and left sides tilt. If the indicator is not on 30 degrees, then the indicator will indicate the amount of tilt the unit has experienced. The middle indicator on the far right represents total overturn. Either of the two would indicate the handling of the product is beyond specification.
ShockWatch®
Illustration 6 | g03722713 |
ShockWatch® indicator should not show red. Red indicates rough handling.
