Final Drive, Brake and Wheel - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Release the hydraulic system pressure.

  2. Remove the tire and rim.

  3. Remove the axle shaft.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the steering and brake hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns.

To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the steering and brake hydraulic system before hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.

  1. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to planetary carrier (2). The weight of planetary carrier (2) is approximately 83 kg (183 lb).

  2. Remove bolts (1).

  3. Install Tooling (B) into planetary carrier (2). Use Tooling (B) in order to loosen planetary carrier (2). Use Tooling (A) and the suitable lifting device in order to remove planetary carrier (2).

  4. Remove O-ring seal (3) from planetary carrier (2).

  5. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to service brake (5) and wheel assembly (6). The combined weight of service brake (5) and wheel assembly (6) is approximately 337 kg (743 lb).

  6. Remove bolts (4) and the washers.

  7. Use Tooling (C) and the suitable lifting device in order to remove service brake (5) and wheel assembly (6).

  8. Steps 9 and 10 are for the front axle only.

  9. Remove bolts (7) and the washers. Remove brake piston (8).

  10. Remove O-ring seal (9).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install brake piston (8), wheel assembly (6), and service brake (5) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).
