Final Drive, Brake and Wheel - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Release the hydraulic system pressure.

  2. Remove the compactor wheel.

  3. Remove the axle shaft.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the steering and brake hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns.

To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the steering and brake hydraulic system before hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.

  1. Remove two bolts (1) and the washers.

  2. Install Tooling (A) where bolts (1) were removed in Step 1. Remove the remaining bolts (1) and the washers.

  3. Install Tooling (B). Use Tooling (B) in order to loosen planetary carrier (2) enough in order to attach Tooling (C).

  4. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to planetary carrier (2). The weight of planetary carrier (2) is approximately 142 kg (313 lb). Use Tooling (C) and the suitable lifting device in order to remove planetary carrier (2).

  5. Remove O-ring seal (3) from planetary carrier (2).

  6. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to wheel assembly (6). Attach Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to service brake (5). The combined weight of wheel assembly (6) and service brake (5) is approximately 608 kg (1340 lb).

  7. Remove bolts (4) and the washers.

  8. Use Tooling (C), Tooling (D), and the suitable lifting devices in order to remove wheel assembly (6) and service brake (5).

  9. Steps 10 and 11 are for the front axle only.

  10. Remove bolts (7) and the washers. Remove brake piston (8).

  11. Remove O-ring seal (9).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install brake piston (8), wheel assembly (6), and service brake (5) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 425 ± 50 N·m (313 ± 37 lb ft), plus turn bolts (1) an additional 120° ± 10°.
