A New Speed Sensor Group Is Now Used on Certain D6N, D6T, D8T Track-Type Tractors, and PL83 Pipelayers {1401, 1402, 1408, 1907}

Description of Change: A new Speed Sensor Group for the steering motor is now used on certain machines that are listed above. The new Speed Sensor Group provides improved sealing and controls the distance between the speed sensor and the target gear on the steering motor. Thus, improving the steering motor speed signal diagnostics and reduce the occurrence of steering system events.

New 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp

The new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp is a direct replacement for the existing 204-6204 Speed Sensor Gp. The new Speed Sensor Group part number is listed in Table 1.

Rework Procedure

Perform the following procedure for installing new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp :

------ DANGER! ------

Electrocution Hazard! Keep the machine and attachments a safe distance from electrical power. Stay clear 3 m (10 ft) plus twice the line insulator length. Read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions and warnings will cause serious injury or death


------ WARNING! ------

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.

To avoid accidental engine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position. Remove the key for the battery disconnect switch. Use a secure padlock in order to lock the battery compartment access door.

Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.

Perform the following procedure for Installing new speed sensor on D6N:

  1. Disconnect the "LC-C5" harness plug from the existing 204-6204 Speed Sensor Gp .

  1. Replace the existing 204-6204 Speed Sensor Gp with the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

    1. Use the new 351-1904 O-Ring Seal with the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

    1. Torque the two M6 mounting bolts to 12 ± 3 N·m (106.2 ± 26.5 lb in).

  1. Modify the "LC" machine harness by replacing the existing 155-2272 Connector Plug As with the new 230-5008 Connector Plug As .

    Note: The relative position of the wires in the connector has changed for the new 230-5008 Connector Plug As .

    1. Move wire 1 from the existing connector plug into position 1 on the new connector plug assembly.

    1. Move wire 2 from the existing connector plug into position 2 on the new connector plug assembly.

    1. Move wire 3 from the existing connector plug into position 3 on the new connector plug assembly.

    1. Move wire 4 from the existing connector plug into position 4 on the new connector plug assembly. Refer to Illustration 2 for the wire positions in the connectors.

  1. Connect the modified "LC" machine harness to the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

  1. Update machine software to support the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp. Refer to Table 3 for the correct software part number. The new software Gp is available in SIS WEB.

Perform the following procedure for installing new speed sensor on D6T:

  1. Disconnect the "LV-C1" harness plug from the existing 204-6204 Speed Sensor Gp .

  1. Replace the existing 204-6204 Speed Sensor Gp with the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

    1. Use the new 351-1904 O-Ring Seal .

    1. Torque the two M6 mounting bolts to 12 ± 3 N·m (106.2 ± 26.5 lb in).

  1. Disconnect the "LV" Switch Harness As from the "LJ-C5" harness plug.

    1. Discard the "LV" Switch Harness As.

  1. Connect the "LJ-C5" harness plug to the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

  1. Update machine software to support the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp. Refer to Table 3 for the correct software part number. The new software Gp is available in SIS WEB.

Perform the following procedure for Installing new speed sensor on D8T and PL83:

  1. Disconnect the "CR-C3" harness plug from the existing 204-6204 Speed Sensor Gp .

  1. Replace the existing 204-6204 Speed Sensor Gp with the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

    1. Use the new 351-1904 O-Ring Seal with the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

    1. Torque the two M6 mounting bolts to 12 ± 3 N·m (106.2 ± 26.5 lb in).

  1. Modify the "CR" machine harness by replacing the existing 155-2272 Connector Plug As with the new 230-5008 Connector Plug As .

    Note: The relative position of the wires in the connector has changed for the new 230-5008 Connector Plug As .

    1. Move wire 1 from the existing connector plug into position 1 on the new connector plug assembly.

    1. Move wire 2 from the existing connector plug into position 2 on the new connector plug assembly.

    1. Move wire 3 from the existing connector plug into position 3 on the new connector plug assembly.

    1. Move wire 4 from the existing connector plug into position 4 on the new connector plug assembly. Refer to Illustration 4 for the wire positions in the connectors.

  1. Connect the modified "CR" machine harness to the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp .

  1. Update machine software to support the new 358-2399 Speed Sensor Gp. Refer to Table 3 for the correct software part number. The new software Gp is available in SIS WEB.
