This procedure should be followed on completion of the procedure to inspect the fuel injection pump. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS3767, "Inspection of Fuel Injection Pumps" for the correct procedure.

To prevent damage, eliminate fuel leakage and to protect human health and the environment, Delphi fuel pumps must be returned according to the following procedure per international and national transportation regulations and mandates.

Ensure that the fuel injection pump is drained of fuel by following step 1 to step 12.

  1. Remove the fuel injection pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for the correct procedure.

  1. Place a suitable container below the fuel injection pump in order to catch any fuel that might be spilled.

    Typical example

  1. Remove outlet connection (1) on the return fuel outlet of the fuel injection pump.

  1. Remove timing device closing plug (2) to allow the unit to vent whilst draining.

Note: If a small amount of fuel is expelled from the fuel injection pump in step 3 and step 4, the advance device end plate (4) may be removed to allow complete drainage of the fuel injection pump.

  1. If necessary, remove screws (3). Remove advance device end plate (4) .

  1. Drain the fuel for the fuel injection pump. Ensure as much fuel has been drained from the fuel injection pump as possible.

  1. If necessary, install advance device end plate (4). Install screws (3) to advance device end plate (4). Tighten screws (3) finger tight.

  1. Install timing device closing plug (2). Tighten timing device closing plug (2) finger tight.

  1. Install outlet connection (1) on the return fuel outlet of the fuel injection pump. Tighten outlet connection (1) finger tight.

  1. Plug or cap all open ports with suitable plugs or caps.

  1. Wrap the fuel injection pump in a sealed compatible plastic bag. Ensure that the fuel injection pump is contained within a strong outer packaging with non-conductive, compatible inner cushioning material to prevent movement of the part in the box.

Note: Ensure that all supporting documentation reference to the part is contained within the package, but not within the sealed compatible plastic bag containing the part.

  1. Securely seal the box or outer packaging.
