Think Safety |
Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.
Improper operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair of this product can be dangerous and could result in injury or death.
Do not operate or perform any lubrication, maintenance, or repair on this product until you have read and understood the operation, lubrication, maintenance, and repair information.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this manual and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons.
The hazards are identified by the Safety Alert Symbol and followed by a Signal Word such as "DANGER","WARNING", or "CAUTION". The Safety Alert "WARNING" label is shown below.
A non-exhaustive list of operations that may cause product damage are identified by "NOTICE" labels on the product and in this publication.
Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. The warnings in this publication and on the product are therefore, not all inclusive. If a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used, the operator must be sure that the procedures are safe. The operator must also be sure that the product will not be damaged or made unsafe by any unspecified procedures.
The information, specifications, and illustrations in this publication are based on information that was available at the time that the publication was written. The specifications, torques, pressures, measurements, adjustments, illustrations, and other items can change at any time. These changes can affect the service that is given to the product. Obtain the complete and most current information before you start any job.
When replacement parts are required for this product, Caterpillar recommends using Cat replacement parts or parts with equivalent specifications including, but not limited to physical dimensions, type, strength, and material.

Information
Wear a hard hat, protective glasses, and other protective equipment, as required. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry that can snag on controls or on other parts of the equipment. Make sure that all protective guards and all covers are secured in place on the equipment.
Know the appropriate work site hand signals and the personnel that are authorized to give the hand signals. Accept hand signals from one person only.
Obey all local regulations for the disposal of liquids.
Do not allow unauthorized personnel on the equipment.
Unless you are instructed otherwise, perform maintenance with the equipment in the servicing position. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the procedure for placing the equipment in the servicing position.
Crushing Prevention and Cutting Prevention
Support the equipment properly before you perform any work or maintenance beneath that equipment. Do not depend on the hydraulic cylinders to hold up the equipment. Equipment can fall if a control is moved, or if a hydraulic line breaks.
Stay clear of all rotating and moving parts.

General Information Section
Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking. When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component. Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed. |
To avoid injury do not stand on or between implement and machine while operating lift control. |
Introduction
The 142-6893 Adjustable Lifting Bracket Group is a "C"-style lifting device. The lifting bracket is used to remove and install heavy parts and assemblies for a wide variety of applications.
The following features provide maximum versatility:
- Internal threaded rods adjust extension arms to achieve center of gravity.
- Asymmetrical, adjustable lifting bracket can be oriented with either arm in the upright position.
- Additional adapters increase versatility and eliminate the need for multiple lifting brackets.

NOTICE |
---|
Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings below could result in injury or death. Verify that the load to be lifted does not exceed the specified capacity. Measure the length of extension at A and B, and match with the chart. Always use the lower of the two capacities. Always adjust the arms to the shortest usable length. Refer to the service manual for specific applications. Do not adjust under load. Inspect the condition of the lifting bracket group prior to use. Lubricate as necessary. |
Optional Adapters
Optional adapters can be used to make this tooling more versatile.
Note: For more details on optional adapters, check the referred documents in section ""References" ".
Hardware used to attach adapter plates and bracket assemblies must meet or exceed 10.9 Metric or Grade 8 (English) specifications. Always use hardened flat washers, and tighten all hardware to the correct torque value for the fastener size.

Operation Section
General Setup
- Identify the load to be lifted.
Note: The asymmetrical lifting bracket can be oriented with either arm in the upright (top) position. For more information, refer to the specific service manual for the component to be lifted.
- Attach dealer supplied 151-2816 Handling Plate (6) on top extension arm with two Grade 8 bolts (7), and 5P-8250 Washers (8). Tighten bolts to Standard Torque.

(6) 151-2816 Handling Plate (7) 2H-3744 Bolts - Tighten bolts to Standard Torque (8) 5P-8250 Washers |
- Refer to the specific service manual for the component to be lifted. Rotate arm extension adjusting screw (4) to adjust upper and lower extension arms (2) to the required dimensions.
Note: Refer to NEHS0960 Tool Operating Manual for additional information on the use of shackles.
Illustration 9 | g03403019 |
- Attach an appropriate overhead lifting device to lift and support 142-6893 Adjustable Lifting Bracket Group .
Note: The WLL of the hoist or lifting device used for this step should be more than the weight of the machine component being lifted and all of the tooling used to lift it.
Note: Refer to the appropriate service manual for additional information on using specific lifting bracket attachments.

NOTICE |
---|
To avoid damage to the lifting group, do not use an impact wrench to rotate the adjusting screw. Use a hand wrench or socket. Do not adjust the extension arms while a load is suspended from the tool. |
- Follow the information in the specific Disassembly and Assembly Service Manual for the machine component to be lifted.
- Attach load or adapter bracket to lower mounting plate (3). Only use 10.9 (Metric) or Grade 8 (English) hardware. Tighten all fasteners to standard torque.

- Do not use the lifting bracket group to position or rotate loads off center.
Illustration 16 | g02925598 |
- Do not extend or retract the lifting bracket extension arms while a load is suspended from the tool.
Illustration 17 | g02925616 |
- Do not use end plate (5) holes for lifting a load.
Illustration 18 | g02925636 |
- After each use, fully retract both extension arms (2). Store the lifting bracket group laying flat in a clean, dry area.
NOTICE |
---|
It is always important to lay the lifting bracket group flat during storage to prevent the lifting bracket group from falling. |
Maintenance
Inspect the lifting bracket group, including adapter plates and bracket extension assemblies before each use. Immediately replace any damaged parts.
- Inspect all welds and check for damaged or bent components.
Illustration 19 | g02926320 |
- Inspect threaded holes in extension arms.
- Clean the tool using a nonsolvent based cleaner.
