Using UPSView
Loading the Software
- Power up your computer according to the manufacturers recommendations. The icon for UPSView (1) will appear on the screen of the computer. Refer to Illustration 1.

The Default Display for UPSView |
The software will begin loading. The default display for UPSView will appear. Illustration 2 is the upper portion of the UPSView display that is seen on the screen of the computer.
Connecting to the System
There are three methods of connecting to the system with UPSView:
- RS-232 or RS-485
- Modem
- Network
RS-232 or RS-485 Direct Connection Procedure
The following instructions explain how to connect a PC to a UPS via the RS-232 or RS-485 serial communications ports.
Note: On a system with a System Input/Output Board, there is a jumper ("JMP1") that is preset for RS-232 communications. If you need RS-485 communications, the jumper must be reset. The information is printed on the board.
- Proceed to the User Interface Panel. Place the keyswitch (1) in the "Bypass" Position. Refer to Illustration 3.

- Connect a computer equipped with UPSView to the PC communications port.
The RS-232/RS-485 port is located on the System I/O Board on the left panel in the cabinet of the UPS. Refer to Illustration 4.

- Apply power to the system.
- Select "PC Settings/Connection Settings" from the UPSView menu bar.
The Illustration 6 will appear.

- Select "Direct Connect (serial)".

- Select the "Serial/Modem Port Number" from the drop-down list.
- Select the "Serial/Modem Baud Rate" from the drop-down menu.
- Select "System Summary Telemetry" or "Detailed MMU Telemetry" as required.
- Click on the "Connect" button.
Your PC is now connected directly to the UPS via the serial communications port.
- Bring your system online as instructed in the appropriate operation manual.
Connecting via a Modem
The following items are needed in order to monitor the UPS, if the UPS is equipped with a modem.
- Analog phone line
- Modem option
- Select "PC Settings/Connection Settings" from the UPSView menu bar.
Refer to Illustration 5.
- Select "Modem Connect" from the Connection Settings menu.

- Select the "Serial/Modem port number" from the drop-down list.
- Select the "Serial/Modem baud rate" from the drop-down list.
- Input the "Modem dial-out number". The "Modem dial-out number" is the number of the telephone line connected to the target system being monitored.
- Select the "System Summary Telemetry" or "Detailed MMU Telemetry" as required.
- Click on the "Connect" button.
Your PC is now connected to the UPS via the modem.
A modem connection DOES NOT allow you to do the following:
- Calibrate the UPS
- Change operational parameters
- Update firmware
- Change UPS service or factory email configuration
- Change UPS pager configuration
- Change modem, network, or SNMP configuration
- Change system name, system time, user-defined messages
Connecting to the Network
The computer running UPSView must have network access in order to enable monitoring via the network. The UPS must have the Ethernet option installed.
- Select "PC Settings/Connection Settings" from the UPSView menu bar.
Refer to Illustration 5.
- Select "Network Connect".

- Input the "Network IP address".
- Input the "Base Network Port Address".
Your Network Administrator can assist you with the Network IP and the Base Network Port addresses.
- Click on the "Connect" button.
Your PC is now connected to the UPS.
A network connection DOES NOT allow you to do the following:
- Calibrate the UPS
- Change operational parameters
- Update firmware
- Change UPS service or factory email configuration
- Change UPS pager configuration
- Change modem, network, or SNMP configuration
- Change system name, system time, user-defined messages
Connection Menu
- Select "Connection" from the default menu.

- Select "Connect" from the drop-down menu.
Disconnect
- Select "Connection" from the default menu.
- Select "Disconnect" from the drop-down menu.
The "Disconnect" option disables communication between UPSView and the UPS.
Note: All new telemetry data is lost while UPSView is disconnected from the UPS. Notices, alarms, and other error messages may occur while UPSView is disconnected.

Configuring the UPS
SNMP Setup
- Select "UPS Settings/SNMP Configuration" from the drop-down menu.

- Enter the "SNMP Trap IP Address" number.

Note: The SNMP information shown in Illustration 13 is an example. Obtain the actual settings from your network administrator.
- Enter the "SNMP Port" number.
- Enter the "SNMP Trap Port" number.
- Enter the "SNMP Community String".
- Enter the "SNMP Trap Community String".
- Click on the "Send button" in order to store the information in the UPS.
- Click on the "Receive" button in order to view the current settings stored in the UPS.
- Click the "Test" button. Clicking the "Test" button sends a test to the SNMP Trap IP addresses in order to ensure that the settings are correct.
Note: The UPS may need to be reset in order for the information to take effect. Press "Control R" then enter "Y" in order to reset the UPS.
- Click on the "Close" button to close out the window.
"Modem Configuration"

The modem string can be changed. Unless you are extremely familiar with the installation of a modem, use the default configuration. This capability should allow the custom configuration of the modem. Whenever the type of modem is changed, the appropriate modem string is recalled from ROM. Entering "Control-Q" from UPSView will store the modem string in the Modems NVRAM.
Note: If a modem connection exists and an event occurs, a paging function will not occur.
Note: If a serial connection exists and an event occurs, a paging function will not occur.
Note: When a modem or network connection is made, the paging function is canceled.
Note: The paging function will occur only if a pager number and callback number have been entered.
Note: The "Modem Configuration" string that is in illustration 14 is an example. The modem information string is input at the factory. The modem information string should only be changed by trained personnel.
- Select "Settings/Remote Notification Settings".
- Select "Modem Configuration".
- Input the " Modem Configuration" string.
- Click on the "Receive" button in order to view the current settings that are stored in flash memory.
Note: The "Modem Configuration" string that is in illustration 14 is an example. The modem information string is input at the factory. The modem information string should only be changed by trained personnel.
- Change and/or edit the modem configuration string.
- Click on the "Send" button in order to store the information into flash memory.
- Click on the "Exit" button in order to close the window.
Modem Strings
The modem string can be changed. Unless you are extremely familiar with the installation of a modem, use the default configuration. This capability should allow the custom configuration of the modem. Whenever the type of modem is changed, the appropriate modem string is recalled from ROM. Entering "Control-Q" from UPSView will store the modem string in the Modems NVRAM.
Note: If a modem connection exists and an event occurs, a paging function will not occur.
Note: If a serial connection exists and an event occurs, a paging function will not occur.
Note: When a modem or network connection is made, the paging function is canceled.
Note: The paging function will occur only if a pager number and callback number have been entered.
Email Setup and Operation
The following instructions tell you how to configure your UPS in order to send email notices to personnel responsible for operating and maintaining the UPS.
The customer must have the network option installed in order to use email notification. Refer to Section that is titled "Connecting to the Network". The UPS must have access to a network with an email server running SMTP on Port 25.
Email Network Configuration Procedure
Perform the following steps in order to configure UPS network settings to allow you to use UPS email.
- Select "UPS Settings" from the UPSView menu bar. Refer to Illustration 15.

- Select "Network Configuration" from the UPS Settings drop-down menu.
- Enter the UPS system "IP Address".
Note: Actual network information should be obtained from the Network Administrator.

- Enter the "Mail Server IP Address" number (if email notification is desired).
- Enter the "Subnet Mask" number.
- Enter the "Default Gateway" number.
- Enter the "Port" number.
- Click on the "Send" button in order to store the information in the UPS.
- Click on the "Receive" button in order to view the current settings stored in the UPS.
- Press "Control R" then enter "Y" in order to reset the UPS.
- Click on the "Close" button in order to close out the window.
Email network configuration is complete.
Service Email Configuration
- Select "UPS Settings/Remote Notification Settings" from the UPSView menu bar. The Remote Notification Settings include selections for Service and Factory email configurations as well as Pager configuration.

- Select "Service Email Configuration" from the drop-down menu. Refer to Illustration 17.
- Enter the "Email Addresses".
Note: The system accepts up to four email addresses.

- Click on the "Send" button in order to store the information in the UPS.
- Click on the "Receive" button in order to view the current settings stored in the UPS.
Note: Network configuration must have the mail server IP address defined.
- Press "Control R" and enter "Y" in order to reset the UPS.
- Click the "Test" button. Clicking the "Test" button will send out a test email to the email address in order to ensure that the settings are correct.
- Click on the "Close" button in order to close out the window.
UPS Paging Configuration
The UPS can notify authorized personnel via pager whenever required.
Note: Your system must have the modem option installed for paging to work.
Pager Configuration
- Select "UPS Settings" from the Menu bar.
- Select "Remote Notification Settings" from the drop-down menu.
- Select "Pager Configuration".
The following screen appears.
- Input the "Dial in Number". The "Dial in Number" is the number of the telephone line that is connected to the UPS.

- Select "Tone Dialing" or "Pulse Dialing" as required.
- Select "Broadcast Paging Mode" or "Escalate Paging Mode" as required. The system can select up to four pager numbers.
- Input the "Pager Numbers", including any outside access prefixes.
- Select "Notification Enables". You can select Alarm Notification or Notice Notification or both.
- Select "Pager Type".
- Input the "Pager Number".
- Input the "Pager ID" number. The pager ID Number is for Alphanumeric Pagers only.
- Input the "Delay (Seconds)". This delay interval is the function that allows the paging service in order to complete the "Welcome Message" before allowing a page message to be input.
- Click on the "Send" button in order to store the information into flash memory.
- Click on the "Receive" button in order to view the current settings stored in flash memory.
- Repeat steps one through seven in order to set up pager numbers for pagers two, three, and four.
- Click the "Test" button. Clicking the "Test" button will send out a test page to the specified pager in order to ensure that the settings are correct.
- Click on the "Close" button in order to close out the window.
Pager Options
A number of pager options are available. For example, broadcast and escalate are optional methods for communicating with an address.
Broadcast Mode - Broadcast mode attempts to page all addresses on the list with a slight delay between each call. There will then be a delay of 5 minutes while waiting for a call-back. When there is no call-back, the system repeats the sequence.
Escalate Mode - Escalate Mode attempts to page three times with intervals of 5 minutes between each call before moving to the next address (this interval is fixed and is not programmable). If a busy signal is received, the system waits 15 seconds before trying up to a total of five times.
Note: You must dial in in order to cancel paging or the system continues another 200 times.

Understanding the Display of the UPSView Software

The display window of the UPSView software is made up of the following sections: a Menu Bar (1), a Text Window (2) and the Status Tiles (3). Refer to Illustration 20.
The information in this section provides general information for using the UPSView software. The UPSView software is a PC-based UPS data-monitoring and system control application that tracks and displays real-time system information. The UPSView software also allows you to control, change various operational settings, and calibrate the UPS system. Specific procedures and UPS settings are contained in the service manual for your UPS.
This section explains what you will see on the display of the UPSView software, explains what is on the Menu Bar, describes how pull-down menus work, and explains the different ways UPS system telemetry is displayed.
Menu Bar

The Menu Bar allows you to select the pull-down menus so you can perform different tasks, make system adjustments, and control your UPS.
Notice that some selections are in black text while other settings are grayed out. Grayed out text indicates that you do not have the ability to select those particular functions. Limitations on hardware configuration or your password level may be reasons for not being able to choose a grayed out selection.

We will explain the selections under all the headings on the Menu Bar in later sections of this manual. For now, we will continue with explanations of the other features found in the screen of the UPSView software.
Text Window

Text messages that are shown in the Text Window of the UPSView software contain system information that indicating various operational conditions. Information is displayed in green, yellow, or red text to indicate condition importance.
Green Text
Green text is shown during normal system operation and indicates normal operating states or state changes. There are no notices or alarms needing your attention.
Yellow Text
Yellow text display information indicates important system information and is a notice only. Yellow text messages indicate an important system condition that is not serious enough to cause a system shutdown.
Note: A buzzer sounds and gives notice of a system condition that may require your attention.
Red Text
Red text display information is an alarm and shows the nature of the system fault. If this information is not acted upon, the system automatically shuts down if the fault is serious.
Telemetry Window

The Telemetry window is the lower portion of the screen in the UPSView software that contains tiles that display the information channels that are monitored by the UPSView software.
Floating-Point Tiles
Tiles show fluctuations in system telemetry. This telemetry includes, but is not limited to the following:
- temperatures
- voltages
- currents
- frequencies
- speeds
Floating-point tile information can be displayed in three ways:
- numeric only
- bar graph with numeric information
- line graph with bar graph and numeric information
Displaying Telemetry Values
Telemetry values are displayed in expandable formats that allow you to interpret specific data easily.
Numeric Tile

A numeric tile shows up-to-date telemetry values. The data color indicates the status of that specific telemetry channel. Green shows that the telemetry is OK, yellow is a notice condition, and red is an alarm condition.
Note: The telemetry values are updated two times per second.
Bar Graph Display

Select the upper-left button to expand a numeric tile into a bar graph displaying the same telemetry values as the numeric tile, but in a vertical bar graph format. To return to the numeric tile, select the upper left button again.
Line Graph Display

Open a line graph by clicking the upper right-hand button. The line and bar graphs are combined in the expanded tile. The line graph displays 2 minutes of parameter history. All line graphs are accessible to the crosshairs. Refer to "Crosshair Tool" section. Approximately 2 minutes of information are stored in the graph.
Expanded Three-Phase Tiles

Expanded three-phase tiles are displays identical to floating point tiles, except that all three phases of the telemetry channel are displayed in one tile. The display is sequentially progressing from A-B, B-C, and C-A for both numeric and bar graphs.
Status Tile

Status Tiles display the status of the various systems via colored lights. Status light color indicates the following:
Green - the function is ON or available.
Red - the function is OFF or unavailable.
Click on the square in the top left corner of the tile to display the information as a line graph.
Note: There is no bar graph available for the Status Tiles.
Expanded Status Tile

An abbreviation is located below each of the lights. The abbreviation correlates to the name of the Status list. When the tile is expanded, the full name of the status list is displayed. The names are located to the left of the graph.
Numeric Tile

Numeric tiles display integer telemetry stored in the UPS. These telemetry channels are usually counters, such as the discharge counter.
Text Tile

The text tile displays system information such as:
- Mode
- Date
- Time
- State
Note: Bar or line graphs are not available for system mode, date, time, and state tiles.
Crosshair Tool
Use the crosshair tool to examine information displayed in an expanded tile. The crosshair shows the parameter value and the time that value occurred.
Using the Crosshair Tool

The crosshair position determines the reading received at a specific position in a specific moment in time. This feature allows you to track changes that have taken place in the system over time or any particular moment.
To use the crosshair tool, perform the following:
- Move the cursor into a tile line graph.
- Left mouse click to activate the crosshairs.
- Move the crosshair horizontally within the tile with the mouse or the arrow keys.
Note: When the crosshairs are in use, they appear in all tiles expanded to line graphs. Refer to Illustration 34.

Note: The bar graph is not available when crosshairs are used in the graphs.
By placing the crosshair on a bar graph, the bar graph changes to a time-based representation of system information.
Note: The crosshair can be canceled by clicking the rightmost square in the top-left tile corner.
Arranging Tiles
Moving a Tile
To move an individual tile, simply drag and drop the tile to a new location in the display window. To rearrange the order of the tiles, one tile must be dropped in the desired location. The new tile can also appear at the end of the list of tiles.
Grouping Tiles
The groups are separated by lines in the display window. The groups are listed in the "Telemetry" menu. The groups are specified according to the first tile in the group. Organize the tiles by moving a tile to a desired location. The UPSView software automatically updates the groups that are under the "Telemetry" menu.
Hiding Tiles
To hide an individual tile, find the name of the tile under the "Telemetry" menu. Select the desired tile in the menu. To hide an entire group of tiles, select the desired group under the "Telemetry" menu.
Note: An alternate method of hiding a group of tiles is to double-click the line above that group in the display window.
Saving Your Display Configuration
Once you have arranged the tiles in the telemetry window, you can save the configuration so that you may load it whenever you are in the UPSView software.
- From the Main Menu Bar, select Save Display Settings.
The Save Display Settings window appears. Refer to Illustration 35.

- Enter the name that you want to use to identify your display settings file. The name for the that is shown in Illustration 35 is for illustration purposes.
- Select "Save".
The display settings name is saved to the "UPSView" folder.
Loading Your Display Configuration
Once you have saved your Display Configuration, you may load it whenever you are in the UPSView software.
- From the Main Menu Bar, select Load Display Settings.
The Load Display Settings window appears. Refer to Illustration 36.

- Click on your display settings file. The name for the file that is shown in Illustration 36 is for illustration purposes.
- Select "Open".
The display settings are loaded and the UPSView software displays your previously saved configuration.
Changing the Font
You can change the type font that is used in the display. You can change the font face, font style, and size when you select "Change Font" from the Menu Bar.
- Select "Change Font" from the File drop down menu. The following window appears.

- Make the changes wanted.
- Click "OK" when done.
Note: Be careful when changing fonts. The font you choose may make reading UPS display and telemetry text difficult.
Understanding Passwords

Passwords are used by the UPSView software to identify who you are and at what level you may interact with the UPS system. You select the "Enter Password" command from the Menu Bar. Refer to Illustration 38. The following drop-down menu appears when you click "Enter Password".

Entering the correct user name and password allows you to perform functions and access information based on the password level. There are three levels of passwords that can be assigned a user. They are:
- Settings
- Service
- Factory
Once you enter a correct username and password, the Menu Bar shows the menu selection "Clear Password". When you select "Clear Password", the current password is cleared.
