CAN A (J1939) Data Link

The CAN A (J1939) data link is an input and an output of the Electronic Control Module (ECM). The CAN A (J1939) data link communicates with the ECM, both Instrument Clusters, and the service tools. The ECM can input information and the ECM can output information with the CAN A (J1939) data link.

The CAN A (J1939) data link has the following properties:

• Serial data link

• High speed link

• Bidirectional link

The data link is not a visible component. The CAN A (J1939) data link consists of the following components:

• Internal ECM circuits

• Related harness wiring

• Service tool connector

Much information is available on the CAN A (J1939) Data Link. The ECM requires the use of certain data that is sent back and forth on the CAN A (J1939) data link. Some of the shared information is described below:

• The ECM receives commands from the CAN A (J1939) data link in order to change operating modes.

• The ECM receives commands from the CAN A (J1939) data link in order to read service codes that are stored in the ECM memory. The service codes can also be cleared.

• The ECM sends the following information to the CAN A (J1939) data link: engine speed, direction, status of operator error and fault information of the ECM.

• The CAN A (J1939) data link shows this information to the operator. The information is shown on gauges, on alert indicators, and on the display area of the Instrument Cluster.
